Hebrews, Chapter 2

The hearers are warned not to neglect so great a salvation, first spoken by the Master and confirmed by God with signs and wonders. Yeshua, made a little lower than the angels, tasted death for every man and was made like His brethren, to be a merciful and faithful high priest.

So great salvation

2:1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

2:2For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

2:3How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Master, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him;

2:4God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Made a little lower than the angels

2:5For unto the angels has He not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

2:6But one in a certain place testified, saying, “What is man, that You are mindful of him? or the son of man, that You visit him?

διεμαρτύρατο δέ πού τις λέγων, Τί ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος, ὅτι μιμνήσκῃ αὐτοῦ; ἢ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου, ὅτι ἐπισκέπτῃ αὐτόν;

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 8:5 (KJV 8:4).

2:7You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honour, and did set him over the works of Your hands:

2:8You have put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 8:7 (KJV 8:6).

2:9But we see Yeshua (Jesus), who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 8:6 (KJV 8:5).
Made like His brethren

2:10For it became Him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

2:11For both He that sanctifies and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren,

2:12Saying, “I will declare Your name unto My brethren, in the midst of the congregation will I sing praise unto You.”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 22:23 (KJV 22:22).

2:13And again, “I will put My trust in Him.” And again, “Behold I and the children which God has given Me.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 8:17; Isaiah 8:18.

2:14Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

2:15And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

2:16For truly He took not on Him the nature of angels; but He took on Him the seed of Avraham (Abraham).

2:17Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

2:18For in that He Himself has suffered being tempted, He is able to succour them that are tempted.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
