Galatians, Chapter 1

Paul greets the congregations of Galatia and marvels that they are so soon turning to another gospel, which is no gospel. He tells how he received the gospel by revelation of Yeshua the Messiah, not from men, and how after his calling he went to Arav, Damesek and Yerushalayim.

Greeting

1:1Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead;)

1:2And all the brethren which are with me, unto the congregations of Galatia:

1:3Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Master Yeshua the Messiah,

1:4Who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

1:5To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

No other gospel

1:6I marvel that you are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Messiah unto another gospel:

1:7Which is not another; but there are some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Messiah.

1:8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

1:9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that you have received, let him be accursed.

1:10For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Messiah.

Paul’s gospel from God

1:11But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

1:12For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Yeshua the Messiah.

1:13For you have heard of my conduct in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the congregation of God, and wasted it:

1:14And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

1:15But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb, and called me by His grace,

1:16To reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

1:17Neither went I up to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arav (Arabia), and returned again unto Damesek (Damascus).

Paul visits Yerushalayim

1:18Then after three years I went up to Yerushalayim to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.

1:19But other of the apostles saw I none, save Ya’akov (James) the Master’s brother.

1:20Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.

1:21Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia;

1:22And was unknown by face unto the congregations of Yehudah (Judaea) which were in Messiah:

1:23But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preaches the faith which once he destroyed.

1:24And they glorified God in me.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
