Ephesians, Chapter 5

Paul calls the Ephesians to be followers of God and walk in love, to put away fornication, uncleanness and covetousness, and to walk as children of light, filled with the Spirit. Wives are to submit to their husbands and husbands to love their wives, as Messiah loved the congregation.

5:1Be therefore followers of God, as dear children;

5:2And walk in love, as Messiah also has loved us, and has given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

5:3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becomes saints;

5:4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

5:5For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Messiah and of God.

5:6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

5:7Be not therefore partakers with them.

Children of light

5:8For you were sometimes darkness, but now are you light in the Master: walk as children of light:

5:9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

5:10Proving what is acceptable unto the Master.

5:11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

5:12For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

5:13But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever does make manifest is light.

5:14Wherefore He says, “Awake you that sleep, and arise from the dead, and Messiah shall give you light.”

Walk wisely

5:15See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

5:16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

5:17Wherefore be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Master is.

5:18And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

5:19Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

5:20Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah;

5:21Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Wives and husbands

5:22Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Master.

5:23For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Messiah is the head of the congregation: and He is the saviour of the body.

5:24Therefore as the congregation is subject unto Messiah, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

5:25Husbands, love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the congregation, and gave Himself for it;

5:26That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

5:27That He might present it to Himself a glorious congregation, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

5:28So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself.

5:29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Master the congregation:

5:30For we are members of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones.

5:31For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 2:24.

5:32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Messiah and the congregation.

5:33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
