Ephesians, Chapter 2

Paul reminds the Ephesians that they were dead in trespasses and sins, but God, rich in mercy, made them alive with Messiah and saved them by grace through faith. Gentiles once far off are brought near by His blood, made one new man with Israel, and built together into a holy temple.

2:1And you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

2:2Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:

2:3Among whom also we all had our conduct in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Saved by grace

2:4But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us,

2:5Even when we were dead in sins, has quickened us together with Messiah, (by grace you are saved;)

2:6And has raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus):

2:7That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Messiah Yeshua.

2:8For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

2:9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2:10For we are His workmanship, created in Messiah Yeshua unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.

One new man in Messiah

2:11Wherefore remember, that you being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

2:12That at that time you were without Messiah, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

2:13But now in Messiah Yeshua you who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Messiah.

2:14For He is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

2:15Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in Himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

2:16And that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

2:17And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 57:19.

2:18For through Him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

The household of God

2:19Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

2:20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Yeshua the Messiah Himself being the chief corner stone;

2:21In whom all the building fitly framed together grows unto a holy temple in the Lord:

2:22In whom you also are builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
