Ephesians, Chapter 1

Paul greets the saints at Ephesus and blesses God, who has chosen them in Messiah, adopted them as children, redeemed them through His blood and sealed them with the Holy Spirit. He prays that they may know the hope of His calling and the power that raised Messiah and made Him head over all things to the congregation.

Greeting

1:1Paul, an apostle of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Messiah Yeshua:

1:2Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Master Yeshua the Messiah.

Spiritual blessings in Messiah

1:3Blessed be the God and Father of our Master Yeshua the Messiah, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Messiah:

1:4According as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love:

1:5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Yeshua the Messiah to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,

1:6To the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He has made us accepted in the beloved.

1:7In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace;

1:8Wherein He has abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

1:9Having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He has purposed in Himself:

1:10That in the dispensation of the fulness of times He might gather together in one all things in Messiah, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in Him:

1:11In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who works all things after the counsel of His own will:

1:12That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Messiah.

1:13In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,

1:14Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.

Paul’s prayer for the saints

1:15Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Master Yeshua, and love unto all the saints,

1:16Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

1:17That the God of our Master Yeshua the Messiah, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him:

1:18The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

1:19And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power,

1:20Which He wrought in Messiah, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places,

1:21Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

1:22And has put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be the head over all things to the congregation,

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 8:7 (KJV 8:6).

1:23Which is His body, the fulness of Him that fills all in all.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
