1 Thessalonians, Chapter 1

תסלוניקים א א

Paul, Silvanus and Timothy greet the congregation of the Thessalonians and give thanks for their work of faith, labour of love and patience of hope. They recall how the gospel came to them in power, how they turned from idols to serve the living God, and how their faith is spoken of everywhere.

1:1Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy (Timotheus), unto the congregation of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Master Yeshua the Messiah.

Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians

1:2We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;

Εὐχαριστοῦμεν τῷ Θεῷ πάντοτε περὶ πάντων ὑμῶν, μνείαν ὑμῶν ποιούμενοι ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν ἡμῶν,

בבכל פעם שאנו מתפללים בעדכם אנו מודים לאלוהים על כולכם,

1:3Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Master Yeshua the Messiah, in the sight of God and our Father;

1:4Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

εἰδότες, ἀδελφοὶ ἠγαπημένοι ὑπὸ Θεοῦ, τὴν ἐκλογὴν ὑμῶν·

דאחים יקרים ואהובי האדון, אנחנו יודעים שאלוהים בחר בכם,

1:5For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance; as you know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

An example to all who believe

1:6And you became followers of us, and of the Master, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit:

1:7So that you were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

ὥστε γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς τύπους πᾶσι τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἐν τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ καὶ τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ.

זותוך זמן קצר הפכתם בעצמכם לדוגמה ועשיתם שם בין כל המאמינים ביוון.

1:8For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

1:9For they themselves show of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

1:10And to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Yeshua, which delivered us from the wrath to come.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”

Quotations
A note under a verse links each quotation from the Tenakh to our Tenakh chapter page. Those pages follow the Hebrew Bible’s verse numbers; where they differ from the King James numbers, both are given.
