1 Corinthians, Chapter 9

Paul defends his apostleship and his right, like the other apostles, to be supported by those he serves, yet he has not used that right, so as not to hinder the gospel. He becomes all things to all men, and runs and strives so as to win an incorruptible crown.

The rights of an apostle

9:1Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah our Master? are not you my work in the Master?

Οὐκ εἰμὶ ἀπόστολος; οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐλεύθερος; οὐχὶ Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν τὸν Κύριον ἡμῶν ἑώρακα; οὐ τὸ ἔργον μου ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν Κυρίῳ;

9:2If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of my apostleship are you in the Master.

9:3My answer to them that do examine me is this,

9:4Have we not power to eat and to drink?

9:5Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Master, and Kefa (Cephas)?

μὴ οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν ἀδελφὴν γυναῖκα περιάγειν, ὡς καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ ἀπόστολοι, καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ Κηφᾶς;

9:6Or I only and Bar-Naba (Barnabas), have not we power to forbear working?

ἢ μόνος ἐγὼ καὶ Βαρναβᾶς οὐκ ἔχομεν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ μὴ ἐργάζεσθαι;

9:7Who goes a warfare any time at his own charges? who plants a vineyard, and eats not of the fruit thereof? or who feeds a flock, and eats not of the milk of the flock?

τίς στρατεύεται ἰδίοις ὀψωνίοις ποτέ; τίς φυτεύει ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ καρποῦ αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐσθίει; ἢ τίς ποιμαίνει ποίμνην, καὶ ἐκ τοῦ γάλακτος τῆς ποίμνης οὐκ ἐσθίει;

9:8Say I these things as a man? or says not the Torah the same also?

μὴ κατὰ ἄνθρωπον ταῦτα λαλῶ; ἢ οὐχὶ καὶ ὁ νόμος ταῦτα λέγει;

9:9For it is written in the Torah of Moshe (Moses), “You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the grain.” Does God take care for oxen?

ἐν γὰρ τῷ Μωσέως νόμῳ γέγραπται, Οὐ φιμώσεις βοῦν ἀλοῶντα. μὴ τῶν βοῶν μέλει τῷ Θεῷ;

Tenakh. Quotes Deuteronomy 25:4.

9:10Or says He it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that plows should plow in hope; and that he that threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.

9:11If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

εἰ ἡμεῖς ὑμῖν τὰ πνευματικὰ ἐσπείραμεν, μέγα εἰ ἡμεῖς ὑμῶν τὰ σαρκικὰ θερίσομεν;

9:12If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Messiah.

9:13Do you not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?

οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ τὰ ἱερὰ ἐργαζόμενοι ἐκ τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐσθίουσιν, οἱ τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ προσεδρεύοντες τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ συμμερίζονται;

9:14Even so has the Master ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Paul does not use his right

9:15But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

9:16For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

9:17For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

9:18What is my reward then? Truly that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Messiah without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.

All things to all men

9:19For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

9:20And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the Torah, as under the Torah, that I might gain them that are under the Torah;

9:21To them that are without Torah, as without Torah, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Messiah,) that I might gain them that are without Torah.

9:22To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

9:23And this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you.

Running to win the prize

9:24Know you not that they which run in a race run all, but one receives the prize? So run, that you may obtain.

9:25And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

9:26I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air:

9:27But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
