1 Corinthians, Chapter 8
Paul writes about food offered to idols. Knowledge puffs up but love edifies; an idol is nothing, and there is one God and one Master, yet those with knowledge must take care that their liberty does not become a stumblingblock to a weaker brother.
8:1Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies.
8:2And if any man think that he knows any thing, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.
8:3But if any man love God, the same is known of Him.
8:4As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
8:5For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there are gods many, and lords many,)
8:6But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, by whom are all things, and we by Him.
8:7Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.
8:8But food commends us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.
8:9But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.
8:10For if any man see you which have knowledge sit at table in the idol’s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;
ἐὰν γάρ τις ἴδῃ σὲ τὸν ἔχοντα γνῶσιν ἐν εἰδωλείῳ κατακείμενον, οὐχὶ ἡ συνείδησις αὐτοῦ ἀσθενοῦς ὄντος οἰκοδομηθήσεται εἰς τὸ τὰ εἰδωλόθυτα ἐσθίειν;
8:11And through your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Messiah died?
καὶ ἀπολεῖται ὁ ἀσθενῶν ἀδελφὸς ἐπὶ τῇ σῇ γνώσει, δι’ ὃν Χριστὸς ἀπέθανεν;
8:12But when you sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Messiah.
8:13Wherefore, if food make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world stands, lest I make my brother to offend.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
