1 Corinthians, Chapter 13

Paul shows the more excellent way of love. Without love, tongues, prophecy, knowledge, faith and sacrifice are nothing. Love is patient and kind and never fails, while prophecies, tongues and knowledge will pass away; faith, hope and love abide, and the greatest of these is love.

Without love I am nothing

13:1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding bronze, or a tinkling cymbal.

13:2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.

13:3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profits me nothing.

Love is patient

13:4Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up,

13:5Does not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil;

13:6Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

13:7Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails

13:8Love never fails: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

13:9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

13:10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

13:11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

13:12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13:13And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
