Haftarah · 1 Kings 7:13–26 (or 7:40–50)

Haftarah

הפטרה

Betzalel, filled “with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge” (Exodus 35:31), makes the vessels of the tabernacle. In the haftarah Chiram of Tzor, “filled with wisdom, and understanding, and skill” (7:14), makes the pillars Yachin and Boaz and the molten sea for the house that King Shlomo built. Chabad and Sephardic communities read 1 Kings 7:13–26; other Ashkenazi communities read 7:40–50, which follows below. When Vayakhel and Pekudei are read together, the haftarah of Pekudei is read.

7:13And King Shlomo (Solomon) sent and fetched Chiram (Hiram) out of Tzor (Tyre).

Vayishlaḥ hameleḥ Shelomoh vayikaḥ et-Ḥiram miTzor.

7:14He was a widow’s son of the tribe of Naftali (Naphtali), and his father was a man of Tzor, a worker in brass; and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and skill to work all works in brass. And he came to King Shlomo, and worked all his work.

Maftir: Shabbat Shekalim

מפטיר שקלים

In a leap year Shabbat Vayakhel is often Shabbat Shekalim, the Shabbat on or before Rosh Chodesh Adar II. A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the half-shekel that every man gave for the service of the tent of meeting.

30:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

Vayedaber Adonai el-Mosheh lemor.

יאוַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

30:12“When you take the sum of the children of Yisrael according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto Hashem, when you number them; that there be no plague among them, when you number them.

Shekalim Haftarah · 2 Kings 11:17–12:17

Haftarah: Shabbat Shekalim

הפטרת שקלים

Read on Shabbat Shekalim instead of 1 Kings 7. Chabad and Sephardic communities begin at 2 Kings 11:17; other Ashkenazi communities begin at 12:1. King Yehoash has the holy money that the people bring collected to repair the house of Hashem (12:5–6).

11:17And Yehoyada (Jehoiada) made a covenant between Hashem and the king and the people, that they should be Hashem’s people; between the king also and the people.

Vayiḥrot Yehoyada et-haberit bein Adonai uvein hameleḥ uvein ha'am lihyot le'am la-Adonai uvein hameleḥ uvein ha'am.

11:18And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and broke it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly, and slew Matan (Mattan) the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of Hashem.

11:19And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of Hashem, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king’s house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.

11:20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet; and they slew Atalyahu (Athaliah) with the sword beside the king’s house.

12:2In the seventh year of Yehu (Jehu) Yehoash began to reign; and forty years he reigned in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). And his mother’s name was Tzivyah (Zibiah) of Be’er Sheva (Beer-sheba).

12:3And Yehoash did that which was right in the sight of Hashem all his days in which Yehoyada the priest instructed him.

12:4But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense in the high places.

Maftir for Shabbat Parah · Numbers 19:1–22

Maftir: Shabbat Parah

מפטיר פרה

In some years Shabbat Vayakhel is Shabbat Parah, the Shabbat before Shabbat HaChodesh. A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the law of the red heifer, whose ashes made the people clean so that they could bring the Pesach offering.

19:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,

Vayedaber Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon lemor.

אוַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה וְאֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

19:2“This is the ordinance of the law which Hashem has commanded, saying, ‘Speak unto the children of Yisrael, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke;

Zot ḥukat hatorah asher-tzivah Adonai lemor daber el-benei Yisra'el veyikḥu eleḥa farah adumah temimah asher ein-bah mum asher lo-alah aleha ol.

Haftarah: Shabbat Parah

הפטרת פרה

Read on Shabbat Parah instead of 1 Kings 7. Hashem promises, “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean” (36:25), and “a new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you” (36:26).

36:16Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,

Vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor.

טזוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

36:17“Son of man, when the house of Yisrael dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings; their way was before Me as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

מפטיר ראש חודש

When Shabbat Vayakhel is Rosh Chodesh Adar II, it is both Shabbat Shekalim and Rosh Chodesh. Three Torah scrolls are read: six aliyot from Vayakhel, the seventh from these verses, and then the Shekalim Maftir.

Rosh Chodesh Haftarah · Isaiah 66:1–24, 23

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh

הפטרת ראש חודש

On Rosh Chodesh Adar II the Shekalim haftarah is read, not this one. This haftarah is given here for reference. After the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).

66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

Koh amar Adonai hashamayim kis'i veha'aretz hadom raglay ei-zeh vayit asher tivnu-li ve'ei-zeh makom menuḥati.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
