Haftarah · 1 Kings 18:1–39

Haftarah

הפטרה

After the golden calf, Moshe stands in the gate of the camp and calls, “Whoever is on Hashem’s side, let him come unto me” (Exodus 32:26). In the haftarah Eliyahu (Elijah) stands before the people on Mount Karmel and asks, “How long will you waver between two opinions?” (18:21). Fire falls from heaven, and the people cry, “Hashem, He is the God” (18:39). Ashkenazi communities read from 18:1; Chabad and Sephardic communities begin at 18:20.

18:1And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Hashem came to Eliyahu (Elijah) in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself unto Achav (Ahab); and I will send rain upon the earth.”

Vayehi yamim rabim udevar-Adonai hayah el-Eliyahu bashanah hashelishit lemor leḥ hera'eh el-Aḥ'av ve'etenah matar al-penei ha'adamah.

18:2And Eliyahu went to show himself unto Achav. And there was a severe famine in Shomron (Samaria).

18:3And Achav called Ovadyahu (Obadiah), who was the governor of his house. (Now Ovadyahu feared Hashem greatly;

18:4for it was so, when Izevel (Jezebel) cut off the prophets of Hashem, that Ovadyahu took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

Maftir for Shabbat Parah · Numbers 19:1–22

Maftir: Shabbat Parah

מפטיר פרה

Shabbat Parah is the Shabbat after Purim (or the one after that), before Shabbat HaChodesh, and it is often Shabbat Ki Tisa. A second Torah scroll is taken out for this Maftir: the law of the red heifer, whose ashes made the people clean so that they could bring the Pesach offering.

19:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,

Vayedaber Adonai el-Mosheh ve'el-Aharon lemor.

אוַיְדַבֵּ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה וְאֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר׃

19:2“This is the ordinance of the law which Hashem has commanded, saying, ‘Speak unto the children of Yisrael, that they bring you a red heifer without spot, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke;

Parah Haftarah · Ezekiel 36:16–38

Haftarah: Shabbat Parah

הפטרת פרה

Read on Shabbat Parah instead of 1 Kings 18. Hashem promises, “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean” (36:25), and “a new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you” (36:26).

36:16Moreover the word of Hashem came unto me, saying,

Vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor.

טזוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

36:17“Son of man, when the house of Yisrael dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own way and by their doings; their way was before Me as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), as published on Chabad.org. Every verse was checked character by character against Chabad’s Tanakh. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
