The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. In most years Mattot and Massei are read together, the reading runs from Numbers 30:2 to 36:13, and this Maftir and haftarah are read. When Shabbat Massei (or Mattot-Massei) falls on Rosh Chodesh Av, a second Torah scroll is taken out for the Maftir for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh.

Haftarah
The second of the three haftarot of rebuke. Massei lists the journeys of Yisrael through the wilderness (33:1); in the haftarah Hashem asks, “What iniquity have your fathers found in Me, that they have gone far from Me” (2:5), and recalls how He led them “through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits” (2:6). Ashkenazi communities end with Jeremiah 3:4; Sephardic communities end instead with 4:1–2. The same haftarah is read when Mattot and Massei are read together, and also on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av.
2:4Hear the word of Hashem, O house of Yaakov (Jacob), and all the families of the house of Yisrael.
2:4Oíd la palabra de Hashem, casa de Yaakov (Jacob), y todas las familias de la casa de Yisrael.

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av
On Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Av the regular haftarah of Massei (Jeremiah 2) is still read, since it is one of the three haftarot of rebuke. Sephardic communities, and some Ashkenazi communities, then add the first and last verses of the Rosh Chodesh haftarah, Isaiah 66:1 and 66:23 (“from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me”).
66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

66:23And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, says Hashem.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
