The Maftir repeats the last verses of the Seventh Portion. In about three years in ten, Chukat and Balak are read together on one Shabbat: the reading runs from Numbers 19:1 to 25:9, and the Maftir and haftarah of Balak are read. When Shabbat Chukat falls on Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, a second Torah scroll is taken out for the Maftir for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh.

Haftarah
Chukat tells how Yisrael asked Sichon king of the Emori to let them pass through his land, and how Sichon came out to fight them at Yahatz and was defeated (21:21–24). In the haftarah Yiftach answers the king of Ammon by retelling that same history: Yisrael took no land from Moav or Ammon, but Hashem delivered Sichon into their hand (11:19–21). All communities read this haftarah when Chukat is read on its own. When Chukat and Balak are read together, Micah 5:6–6:8 is read; on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh, the Rosh Chodesh haftarah.
11:1Now Yiftach (Jephthah) the Gil’adi (Gileadite) was a mighty man of valor, and he was the son of a harlot; and Gil’ad (Gilead) begot Yiftach.

Maftir: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh
When Shabbat Chukat falls on Rosh Chodesh Tammuz (30 Sivan), as it does in a few years, the seven portions of Chukat are read from the first Torah scroll, and this Maftir for Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh is read from a second scroll in place of Numbers 21:34–22:1.
28:9And on the Shabbat day two lambs of the first year without blemish, and two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a meal offering, mingled with oil, and its drink offering.

Haftarah: Shabbat Rosh Chodesh
Read on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh instead of Judges 11:1–33. After the last verse, verse 23 is read again, so that the haftarah ends with “from one new moon to another, and from one Shabbat to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me” (66:23).
66:1Thus says Hashem: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that you build unto Me? And where is the place of My rest?

66:2For all those things My hand has made, and so all those things came to be, says Hashem; but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at My word.

66:3He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he broke a dog’s neck; he that offers an offering, as if he offered swine’s blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yes, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

66:4I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spoke, they did not hear; but they did evil before My eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
- Spanish translation
- The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Telugu translation
- The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
- Transliteration
- Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
- Aliyot & haftarot
- Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
- Hebrew font
- SBL Hebrew, by the Society of Biblical Literature.
