At Shabbat Minchah on Shabbat Chukat, and on Monday and Thursday mornings, this first portion of Balak is read in three aliyot: 22:2–4, 22:5–7 and 22:8–12.

22:2And Balak the son of Tzippor (Zippor) saw all that Yisrael (Israel) had done to the Emori (Amorites).

Vayar Balak ben-Tzipor et kol-asher-asah Yisra'el la'Emori.

22:3And Moav (Moab) was greatly afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moav was distressed because of the children of Yisrael.

22:4And Moav said unto the elders of Midyan (Midian), “Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Tzippor was king of Moav at that time.

22:5He sent messengers therefore unto Bilam (Balaam) the son of Be’or (Beor) to Petor (Pethor), which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people come out from Mitzrayim (Egypt); behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

22:6Come now therefore, I pray you, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”

22:7And the elders of Moav and the elders of Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bilam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.

22:8And he said unto them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Hashem shall speak unto me.” And the princes of Moav stayed with Bilam.

22:13And Bilam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, “Go to your land; for Hashem refuses to give me leave to go with you.”

22:23And the donkey saw the angel of Hashem standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Bilam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way.

Haftarah · Micah 5:6–6:8

Haftarah

Balak hires Bilam to curse Yisrael, and Bilam blesses them instead (23:7–10). Michah recalls it: “O My people, remember now what Balak king of Moav devised, and what Bilam the son of Be’or answered him” (6:5), and the haftarah ends, “He has shown you, O man, what is good” (6:8). All communities read this haftarah, also when Chukat and Balak are read together.

5:6And the remnant of Yaakov shall be in the midst of many peoples as a dew from Hashem, as the showers upon the grass, that tarries not for man, nor waits for the sons of men.

5:7And the remnant of Yaakov shall be among the nations in the midst of many peoples as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he goes through, both treads down and tears in pieces, and none can deliver.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim): the Westminster Leningrad Codex, from the open-source Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible. Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has,” “begat” to “begot”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Moshe (Moses)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged. Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible.
Spanish translation
The Reina-Valera 1909 (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English: older spellings and verb forms are updated (“á” to “a,” “bendecirte he” to “te bendeciré”), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Spanish name in parentheses the first time (e.g., Avram (Abram)), the Divine Name (“Jehová” in the Reina-Valera) is written “Hashem,” and “Dios” (Elohim) is unchanged. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Telugu translation
The Telugu Old Version of the Bible Society of India (Satyavedamu, public domain), lightly updated by Benei Avraham in the same way as the English and Spanish: the Divine Name (“యెహోవా” in the Old Version) is written “హషేమ్” (Hashem), people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar Telugu name in parentheses the first time (e.g., అవ్రామ్ (అబ్రాము)), quotation marks are added, and words damaged in the digital source text are restored. The classical style of the Old Version is kept. Choose the translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Transliteration
Produced from the Hebrew with the open-source hebrew-transliteration library, adapted to Sephardic/Israeli pronunciation and reviewed by hand: ḥ for Chet and Chaf, tz for Tzadi, k for Kuf, and the Divine Name read “Adonai.” Names are capitalized.
Aliyot & haftarot
Portion divisions and haftarah readings follow the standard Jewish calendar outside Israel, cross-checked with Chabad.org and Hebcal. Ashkenazi and Sephardic haftarah customs are both shown.
