Text (469) 608-9944Proverbs, Chapter 18
Sayings on the fool’s mouth and the words of a talebearer, the name of Hashem as a strong tower, pride before destruction, hearing a matter before answering, the power of the tongue over death and life, the good thing of finding a wife, and the friend that sticks closer than a brother.
18:1Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeks and intermeddles with all wisdom.
אלְֽ֭תַאֲוָה יְבַקֵּ֣שׁ נִפְרָ֑ד בְּכָל־תּ֝וּשִׁיָּ֗ה יִתְגַּלָּֽע׃
18:2A fool has no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
בלֹֽא־יַחְפֹּ֣ץ כְּ֭סִיל בִּתְבוּנָ֑ה כִּ֝֗י אִֽם־בְּהִתְגַּלּ֥וֹת לִבּֽוֹ׃
18:3When the wicked comes, then comes also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
גבְּֽבוֹא־רָ֭שָׁע בָּ֣א גַם־בּ֑וּז וְֽעִם־קָל֥וֹן חֶרְפָּֽה׃
18:4The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
דמַ֣יִם עֲ֭מֻקִּים דִּבְרֵ֣י פִי־אִ֑ישׁ נַ֥חַל נֹ֝בֵ֗עַ מְק֣וֹר חָכְמָֽה׃
18:5It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.
השְׂאֵ֣ת פְּנֵי־רָשָׁ֣ע לֹא־ט֑וֹב לְהַטּ֥וֹת צַ֝דִּ֗יק בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃
18:6A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.
ושִׂפְתֵ֣י כְ֭סִיל יָבֹ֣אֽוּ בְרִ֑יב וּ֝פִ֗יו לְֽמַהֲלֻמ֥וֹת יִקְרָֽא׃
18:7A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
זפִּֽי־כְ֭סִיל מְחִתָּה־ל֑וֹ וּ֝שְׂפָתָ֗יו מוֹקֵ֥שׁ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃
18:8The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
חדִּבְרֵ֣י נִ֭רְגָּן כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים וְ֝הֵ֗ם יָרְד֥וּ חַדְרֵי־בָֽטֶן׃
18:9He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.
טגַּ֭ם מִתְרַפֶּ֣ה בִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ אָ֥ח ה֝֗וּא לְבַ֣עַל מַשְׁחִֽית׃
18:10The name of Hashem is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe.
ימִגְדַּל־עֹ֭ז שֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה בּֽוֹ־יָר֖וּץ צַדִּ֣יק וְנִשְׂגָּֽב׃
18:11The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.
יאה֣וֹן עָ֭שִׁיר קִרְיַ֣ת עֻזּ֑וֹ וּכְחוֹמָ֥ה נִ֝שְׂגָּבָ֗ה בְּמַשְׂכִּיתֽוֹ׃
18:12Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
יבלִפְנֵי־שֶׁ֭בֶר יִגְבַּ֣הּ לֵב־אִ֑ישׁ וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃
18:13He that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him.
יגמֵשִׁ֣יב דָּ֭בָר בְּטֶ֣רֶם יִשְׁמָ֑ע אִוֶּ֥לֶת הִיא־ל֝֗וֹ וּכְלִמָּֽה׃
18:14The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
ידרֽוּחַ־אִ֭ישׁ יְכַלְכֵּ֣ל מַחֲלֵ֑הוּ וְר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה מִ֣י יִשָּׂאֶֽנָּה׃
18:15The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
טולֵ֣ב נָ֭בוֹן יִקְנֶה־דָּ֑עַת וְאֹ֥זֶן חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים תְּבַקֶּשׁ־דָּֽעַת׃
18:16A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.
טזמַתָּ֣ן אָ֭דָם יַרְחִ֣יב ל֑וֹ וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְדֹלִ֣ים יַנְחֶֽנּוּ׃
18:17He that is first in his own cause seems just; but his neighbour comes and searches him.
יזצַדִּ֣יק הָרִאשׁ֣וֹן בְּרִיב֑וֹ וּבָֽא (כתיב יבא)־רֵ֝עֵ֗הוּ וַחֲקָרֽוֹ׃
18:18The lot causes contentions to cease, and parts between the mighty.
יחמִ֭דְיָנִים יַשְׁבִּ֣ית הַגּוֹרָ֑ל וּבֵ֖ין עֲצוּמִ֣ים יַפְרִֽיד׃
18:19A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
יטאָ֗ח נִפְשָׁ֥ע מִקִּרְיַת־עֹ֑ז וּ֝מִדְיָנִ֗ים (כתיב ומדונים) כִּבְרִ֥יחַ אַרְמֽוֹן׃
18:20A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
כמִפְּרִ֣י פִי־אִ֭ישׁ תִּשְׂבַּ֣ע בִּטְנ֑וֹ תְּבוּאַ֖ת שְׂפָתָ֣יו יִשְׂבָּֽע׃
18:21Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
כאמָ֣וֶת וְ֭חַיִּים בְּיַד־לָשׁ֑וֹן וְ֝אֹהֲבֶ֗יהָ יֹאכַ֥ל פִּרְיָֽהּ׃
18:22Whoso finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour of Hashem.
כבמָצָ֣א אִ֭שָּׁה מָ֣צָא ט֑וֹב וַיָּ֥פֶק רָ֝צ֗וֹן מֵיְהוָֽה׃
18:23The poor uses intreaties; but the rich answers roughly.
כגתַּחֲנוּנִ֥ים יְדַבֶּר־רָ֑שׁ וְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר יַעֲנֶ֥ה עַזּֽוֹת׃
18:24A man that has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.
כדאִ֣ישׁ רֵ֭עִים לְהִתְרֹעֵ֑עַ וְיֵ֥שׁ אֹ֝הֵ֗ב דָּבֵ֥ק מֵאָֽח׃
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
