Proverbs, Chapter 19

Sayings on the poor who walk in integrity, the false witness, the friends of the rich and of the poor, the king’s wrath and favour, a prudent wife from Hashem, lending to Hashem by pity on the poor, chastening a son, the counsel of Hashem that shall stand, and judgments prepared for scorners.

19:1Better is the poor that walks in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

19:2Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hastes with his feet sins.

19:3The foolishness of man perverts his way: and his heart frets against Hashem.

The poor and their friends

19:4Wealth makes many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

19:5A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

19:6Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that gives gifts.

19:7All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursues them with words, yet words are all he has.

19:8He that gets wisdom loves his own soul: he that keeps understanding shall find good.

19:9A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

19:10Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

19:11The discretion of a man defers his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

The king, the son and the wife

19:12The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

19:13A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

19:14House and riches are the inheritance of fathers and a prudent wife is from Hashem.

19:15Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

19:16He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.

19:17He that has pity upon the poor lends unto Hashem; and that which he has given will He pay him again.

Chasten your son

19:18Chasten your son while there is hope, and let not your soul spare for his crying.

19:19A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if you deliver him, yet you must do it again.

19:20Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.

19:21There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of Hashem, that shall stand.

19:22The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

19:23The fear of Hashem tends to life: and he that has it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

Scorners and fools

19:24A slothful man hides his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

19:25Strike a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that has understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

19:26He that wastes his father, and chases away his mother, is a son that causes shame, and brings reproach.

19:27Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causes to err from the words of knowledge.

19:28An ungodly witness scorns judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

19:29Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
