Proverbs, Chapter 17

Sayings on quietness in the house, Hashem who tries the hearts, covering a transgression, the beginning of strife, the friend who loves at all times, the sorrow of a fool’s father, the merry heart as a medicine, and the man of understanding who spares his words.

17:1Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

17:2A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

17:3The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but Hashem tries the hearts.

17:4A wicked doer gives heed to false lips; and a liar gives ear to a naughty tongue.

17:5Whoso mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

17:6Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

Reproof and folly

17:7Excellent speech becomes not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

17:8A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that has it: whithersoever it turns, it prospers.

17:9He that covers a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates very friends.

17:10A reproof enters more into a wise man than a hundred stripes into a fool.

17:11An evil man seeks only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

17:12Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

17:13Whoso rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

The beginning of strife

17:14The beginning of strife is as when one lets out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

17:15He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to Hashem.

17:16Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart to it?

17:17A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

17:18A man void of understanding strikes hands, and becomes surety in the presence of his friend.

17:19He loves transgression that loves strife: and he that exalts his gate seeks destruction.

17:20He that has a froward heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into mischief.

The father of a fool

17:21He that begets a fool does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool has no joy.

17:22A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

17:23A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

17:24Wisdom is before him that has understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

17:25A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

17:26Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

Sparing words

17:27He that has knowledge spares his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

17:28Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Proverbs they are the same as in most English Bibles.
