Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 36
The heads of the families of Gil’ad fear that the inheritance of Tzelofḥad’s daughters will pass to another tribe if they marry outside it; Moshe commands that they marry within their father’s tribe, and they marry sons of Menasheh, so that their inheritance remains in their father’s tribe.
36:1And the heads of the fathers’ houses of the families of the children of Gil’ad (Gilead), the son of Machir, the son of Menasheh (Manasseh), of the families of the sons of Yosef (Joseph), came near, and spoke before Moshe (Moses), and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ houses of the children of Yisrael (Israel);
36:2and they said, “Hashem commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Yisrael; and my lord was commanded by Hashem to give the inheritance of Tzelofḥad (Zelophehad) our brother unto his daughters.
36:3And if they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Yisrael, then their inheritance shall be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they are received; so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance.
36:4And when the jubilee of the children of Yisrael comes, then their inheritance shall be added unto the inheritance of the tribe into which they are received; so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”
36:5And Moshe commanded the children of Yisrael according to the word of Hashem, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Yosef has spoken well.
36:6This is the thing which Hashem commands concerning the daughters of Tzelofḥad, saying, ‘Let them marry whom they think best; only into the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry.’
36:7So shall the inheritance of the children of Yisrael not move from tribe to tribe; for every one of the children of Yisrael shall keep to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.
36:8And every daughter that possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Yisrael shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Yisrael may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers.
36:9Nor shall the inheritance move from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Yisrael shall keep to its own inheritance.”
36:10Even as Hashem commanded Moshe, so did the daughters of Tzelofḥad;
36:11for Maḥlah (Mahlah), Tirtzah (Tirzah), and Ḥoglah (Hoglah), and Milkah (Milcah), and No’ah (Noah), the daughters of Tzelofḥad, were married unto their father’s brothers’ sons.
36:12They were married into the families of the sons of Menasheh the son of Yosef, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.
36:13These are the commandments and the judgments, which Hashem commanded by the hand of Moshe unto the children of Yisrael in the plains of Moav (Moab) by the Yarden (Jordan) near Yeriḥo (Jericho).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
