Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 1
In the fortieth year Moshe speaks to all Yisrael beyond the Yarden in the land of Moav, recalling the command at Ḥorev to take the land, the appointing of judges, the spies sent from Kadesh Barnea, the people’s refusal and Hashem’s oath, and their defeat by the Emori at Ḥormah.
1:1These are the words which Moshe (Moses) spoke unto all Yisrael (Israel) on the other side of the Yarden (Jordan) in the wilderness, in the plain over against Suf (the Red sea), between Paran, and Tofel (Tophel), and Lavan (Laban), and Ḥatzerot (Hazeroth), and Di-Zahav (Dizahab).
1:2(It is eleven days’ journey from Ḥorev by the way of mount Se’ir unto Kadesh Barnea (Kadesh-barnea).)
1:3And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moshe spoke unto the children of Yisrael, according unto all that Hashem had given him in commandment unto them,
1:4after he had slain Siḥon (Sihon) the king of the Emori (Amorites), who dwelt in Ḥeshbon (Heshbon), and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtarot (Astaroth) in Edre’i (Edrei).
1:5On the other side of the Yarden, in the land of Moav (Moab), Moshe began to declare this law, saying,
1:6“Hashem our God spoke unto us in Ḥorev (Horeb), saying, ‘You have dwelt long enough in this mountain.
1:7Turn, and take your journey, and go to the mountain of the Emori, and unto all the places near it, in the plain, in the hills, and in the lowland, and in the south, and by the seaside, to the land of the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and unto Levanon (Lebanon), unto the great river, the river Perat (Euphrates).
1:8Behold, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which Hashem swore unto your fathers, Avraham (Abraham), Yitzḥak (Isaac), and Yaakov (Jacob), to give unto them and to their seed after them.’
1:9And I spoke unto you at that time, saying, ‘I am not able to bear you myself alone.
1:10Hashem your God has multiplied you, and, behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.
1:11(Hashem, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times so many more as you are, and bless you, as He has promised you!)
1:12How can I myself alone bear your load, and your burden, and your strife?
1:13Take wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.’
1:14And you answered me, and said, ‘The thing which you have spoken is good for us to do.’
1:15So I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
1:16And I charged your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him.
1:17You shall not respect persons in judgment; but you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God’s; and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.’
1:18And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
1:19And when we departed from Ḥorev, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw by the way of the mountain of the Emori, as Hashem our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.
1:20And I said unto you, ‘You have come unto the mountain of the Emori, which Hashem our God gives unto us.
1:21Behold, Hashem your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as Hashem, the God of your fathers, has said unto you; fear not, neither be discouraged.’
1:22And you came near unto me every one of you, and said, ‘We will send men before us, and they shall search out the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and the cities into which we shall come.’
1:23And the saying pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for a tribe.
1:24And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshkol (Eshcol), and searched it out.
1:25And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, ‘It is a good land which Hashem our God gives us.’
1:26Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Hashem your God;
1:27and you murmured in your tents, and said, ‘Because Hashem hated us, He has brought us forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), to deliver us into the hand of the Emori, to destroy us.
1:28Where shall we go up? Our brethren have made our heart melt, saying, “The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.”’
1:29Then I said unto you, ‘Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
1:30Hashem your God, who goes before you, He shall fight for you, according to all that He did for you in Mitzrayim before your eyes,

1:32Yet in this thing you did not believe Hashem your God,
1:33who went in the way before you, to search out a place for you to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in a cloud by day.

1:34And Hashem heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying,
1:35‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land, which I swore to give unto your fathers,

1:36except Kalev (Caleb) the son of Yefunneh (Jephunneh); he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he has trodden upon, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Hashem.’

1:37Also Hashem was angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘You also shall not go in there.

1:38Yehoshua (Joshua) the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there; encourage him, for he shall cause Yisrael to inherit it.

1:39Moreover your little ones, who you said would be a prey, and your children, who on that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in there, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
1:40But as for you, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of Yam Suf.’
1:41Then you answered and said unto me, ‘We have sinned against Hashem; we will go up and fight, according to all that Hashem our God commanded us.’ And when you had girded on every man his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.
1:42And Hashem said unto me, ‘Say unto them, “Do not go up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest you be struck before your enemies.”’
1:43So I spoke unto you; and you would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of Hashem, and went presumptuously up into the mountain.
1:44And the Emori, who dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and beat you down in Se’ir (Seir), even unto Ḥormah (Hormah).
1:45And you returned and wept before Hashem; but Hashem would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

1:46So you abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that you abode there.”

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
