Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 25
At Shittim Yisrael commits harlotry with the daughters of Moav and joins himself to Ba’al Pe’or; a plague breaks out until Pinḥas the son of Elazar slays Zimri and the Midyani woman Kozbi, and Hashem gives him His covenant of peace and commands Moshe to harass the Midyanim.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 19–19 here are together 26:1 in most English Bibles.
25:1And Yisrael (Israel) abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moav (Moab).
25:2And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods.
25:3And Yisrael joined himself unto Ba’al Pe’or (Baal-peor); and the anger of Hashem was kindled against Yisrael.
25:4And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before Hashem against the sun, that the fierce anger of Hashem may be turned away from Yisrael.”
25:5And Moshe said unto the judges of Yisrael, “Slay every one his men that were joined unto Ba’al Pe’or.”
25:6And, behold, one of the children of Yisrael came and brought unto his brethren a Midyani (Midianite) woman in the sight of Moshe, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Yisrael, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
25:7And when Pinḥas (Phinehas), the son of Elazar (Eleazar), the son of Aharon (Aaron) the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a spear in his hand;
25:8and he went after the man of Yisrael into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Yisrael, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Yisrael.
25:9And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.
25:10And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
25:11“Pinḥas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aharon the priest, has turned My wrath away from the children of Yisrael, in that he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the children of Yisrael in My jealousy.
25:12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give unto him My covenant of peace;
25:13and he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Yisrael.’”
25:14Now the name of the man of Yisrael that was slain, who was slain with the Midyani woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a father’s house among the Shimoni (Simeonites).
25:15And the name of the Midyani woman that was slain was Kozbi (Cozbi), the daughter of Tzur (Zur); he was head over the people of a father’s house in Midyan (Midian).
25:16And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
25:17“Harass the Midyanim (Midianites), and strike them;
25:18for they harass you with their wiles, with which they have beguiled you in the matter of Pe’or, and in the matter of Kozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midyan, their sister, who was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.”
25:19And it came to pass after the plague,
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
