Numbers, Chapter 24

Seeing that it pleases Hashem to bless Yisrael, Bilam blesses the tents of Yaakov a third time; Balak angrily sends him away, but Bilam speaks of a Star out of Yaakov and of the end of Moav, Edom, Amalek, the Keini and Ashur, and returns to his place.

Bilam’s third parable

24:1And when Bilam (Balaam) saw that it pleased Hashem to bless Yisrael (Israel), he did not go, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

24:2And Bilam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Yisrael abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

24:3And he took up his parable, and said, “Bilam the son of Be’or (Beor) has said, and the man whose eyes are open has said;

24:4he has said, who heard the words of God, who saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

24:5How goodly are your tents, O Yaakov (Jacob), and your tabernacles, O Yisrael!

24:6As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river’s side, as the trees of aloes which Hashem has planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.

24:7He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.

24:8God brought him forth out of Mitzrayim (Egypt); he has as it were the strength of a wild ox; he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.

24:9He crouched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion; who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesses you, and cursed is he that curses you.”

Balak’s anger

24:10And Balak’s anger was kindled against Bilam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said unto Bilam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.

24:11Therefore now flee to your place; I thought to promote you unto great honor; but, behold, Hashem has kept you back from honor.”

24:12And Bilam said unto Balak, “Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent unto me, saying,

24:13‘If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of Hashem, to do either good or bad of my own mind; but what Hashem says, that will I speak’?

24:14And now, behold, I go unto my people; come therefore, and I will advise you what this people shall do to your people in the latter days.”

A Star out of Yaakov

24:15And he took up his parable, and said, “Bilam the son of Be’or has said, and the man whose eyes are open has said;

24:16he has said, who heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the Most High, who saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

24:17I shall see him, but not now; I shall behold him, but not near; there shall come a Star out of Yaakov, and a Scepter shall rise out of Yisrael, and shall strike the corners of Moav (Moab), and destroy all the children of Shet (Sheth).

24:18And Edom shall be a possession, Se’ir (Seir) also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Yisrael shall do valiantly.

24:19Out of Yaakov shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remains of the city.”

Amalek, the Keini and Ashur

24:20And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, “Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish forever.”

24:21And he looked on the Keini (Kenites), and took up his parable, and said, “Strong is your dwelling place, and you put your nest in a rock.

24:22Nevertheless the Keini shall be wasted, until Ashur (Asshur) shall carry you away captive.”

24:23And he took up his parable, and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this!

24:24And ships shall come from the coast of Kittim (Chittim), and shall afflict Ashur, and shall afflict Ever (Eber), and he also shall perish forever.”

24:25And Bilam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
