Numbers, Chapter 23

Balak and Bilam offer bullocks and rams on seven altars, but Hashem puts a word in Bilam’s mouth and he blesses Yisrael instead of cursing; Balak takes him to the top of Pisgah, where he blesses again, and then to the top of Pe’or.

Bilam’s first parable

23:1And Bilam (Balaam) said unto Balak, “Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.”

23:2And Balak did as Bilam had spoken; and Balak and Bilam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.

23:3And Bilam said unto Balak, “Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go; perhaps Hashem will come to meet me; and whatever He shows me I will tell you.” And he went to a high place.

23:4And God met Bilam; and he said unto Him, “I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.”

23:5And Hashem put a word in Bilam’s mouth, and said, “Return unto Balak, and thus you shall speak.”

23:6And he returned unto him, and, behold, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moav (Moab).

23:7And he took up his parable, and said, “Balak the king of Moav has brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, ‘Come, curse me Yaakov (Jacob), and come, defy Yisrael (Israel).’

23:8How shall I curse, whom God has not cursed? Or how shall I defy, whom Hashem has not defied?

23:9For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him; behold, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

23:10Who can count the dust of Yaakov, and the number of the fourth part of Yisrael? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!”

23:11And Balak said unto Bilam, “What have you done unto me? I took you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have blessed them altogether.”

23:12And he answered and said, “Must I not take heed to speak that which Hashem has put in my mouth?”

Bilam’s second parable

23:13And Balak said unto him, “Come, I pray you, with me unto another place, from where you may see them; you shall see but the farthest part of them, and shall not see them all; and curse me them from there.”

Written and read. Written לך, read לְכָה. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

23:14And he brought him into the field of Tzofim (Zophim), to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

23:15And he said unto Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering, while I meet Hashem over there.”

23:16And Hashem met Bilam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, “Go again unto Balak, and say thus.”

23:17And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moav with him. And Balak said unto him, “What has Hashem spoken?”

23:18And he took up his parable, and said, “Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, you son of Tzippor (Zippor):

23:19God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and shall He not do it? Or has He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

23:20Behold, I have received commandment to bless; and He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.

23:21He has not beheld iniquity in Yaakov, neither has He seen perverseness in Yisrael; Hashem his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.

23:22God brought them out of Mitzrayim (Egypt); he has as it were the strength of a wild ox.

23:23Surely there is no enchantment against Yaakov, neither is there any divination against Yisrael; at this time it shall be said of Yaakov and of Yisrael, ‘What has God worked!’

23:24Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion; he shall not lie down until he eats of the prey, and drinks the blood of the slain.”

23:25And Balak said unto Bilam, “Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.”

23:26But Bilam answered and said unto Balak, “Did I not tell you, saying, ‘All that Hashem speaks, that I must do’?”

To the top of Pe’or

23:27And Balak said unto Bilam, “Come, I pray you, I will bring you unto another place; perhaps it will please God that you may curse me them from there.”

23:28And Balak brought Bilam unto the top of Pe’or (Peor), that looks toward the Yeshimon (Jeshimon).

23:29And Bilam said unto Balak, “Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.”

23:30And Balak did as Bilam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
