Numbers, Chapter 17

Elazar makes the censers into plates covering the altar as a sign; the congregation murmurs and a plague breaks out until Aharon stands with incense between the dead and the living; Aharon’s rod, laid up with the rods of the princes, buds and yields almonds.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–15 here are 16:36–50 in most English Bibles. Verses 16–28 here are 17:1–13 in most English Bibles.

The censers made a covering

17:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,

17:2“Speak unto Elazar (Eleazar) the son of Aharon (Aaron) the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire yonder; for they are hallowed,

17:3the censers of these sinners against their own souls; and let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar; for they offered them before Hashem, therefore they are hallowed; and they shall be a sign unto the children of Yisrael (Israel).”

17:4And Elazar the priest took the brass censers, with which they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar,

17:5to be a memorial unto the children of Yisrael, that no stranger, who is not of the seed of Aharon, come near to offer incense before Hashem, that he be not as Koraḥ (Korah), and as his company; as Hashem said to him by the hand of Moshe.

Aharon stays the plague

17:6But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Yisrael murmured against Moshe and against Aharon, saying, “You have killed the people of Hashem.”

17:7And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moshe and against Aharon, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation; and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Hashem appeared.

17:8And Moshe and Aharon came before the tabernacle of the congregation.

17:9And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

17:10“Get up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell upon their faces.

17:11And Moshe said unto Aharon, “Take a censer, and put fire in it from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from Hashem; the plague has begun.”

17:12And Aharon took it as Moshe commanded, and ran into the midst of the congregation; and, behold, the plague had begun among the people; and he put on incense, and made an atonement for the people.

17:13And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

17:14Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Koraḥ.

17:15And Aharon returned unto Moshe unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and the plague was stayed.

Aharon’s rod blossoms

17:16And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

17:17“Speak unto the children of Yisrael, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers, twelve rods; write every man’s name upon his rod.

17:18And you shall write Aharon’s name upon the rod of Levi; for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.

17:19And you shall lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you.

17:20And it shall come to pass, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall blossom; and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Yisrael, with which they murmur against you.”

17:21And Moshe spoke unto the children of Yisrael, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods; and the rod of Aharon was among their rods.

17:22And Moshe laid up the rods before Hashem in the tabernacle of testimony.

17:23And it came to pass, that on the next day Moshe went into the tabernacle of testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aharon for the house of Levi had budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.

17:24And Moshe brought out all the rods from before Hashem unto all the children of Yisrael; and they looked, and took every man his rod.

17:25And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Bring Aharon’s rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a sign against the rebels; and you shall quite take away their murmurings from Me, that they die not.”

17:26And Moshe did so; as Hashem commanded him, so he did.

17:27And the children of Yisrael spoke unto Moshe, saying, “Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.

17:28Whoever comes near at all unto the tabernacle of Hashem shall die; shall we all be consumed with dying?”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
