Numbers, Chapter 18

Hashem charges Aharon and his sons with the sanctuary and the altar, with the Levi’im joined to serve them; He gives the priests the heave offerings, firstfruits and firstborn, gives the Levi’im the tithe for their inheritance, and commands them to give a tenth of the tithe to Aharon.

The charge of priests and Levi’im

18:1And Hashem said unto Aharon (Aaron), “You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.

18:2And your brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, bring with you, that they may be joined unto you, and minister unto you; but you and your sons with you shall minister before the tabernacle of testimony.

18:3And they shall keep your charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle; only they shall not come near the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor you also, die.

18:4And they shall be joined unto you, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle; and a stranger shall not come near unto you.

18:5And you shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar, that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Yisrael (Israel).

18:6And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levi’im (Levites) from among the children of Yisrael; to you they are given as a gift for Hashem, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

18:7Therefore you and your sons with you shall keep your priesthood for everything of the altar, and within the veil; and you shall serve. I have given your priesthood unto you as a service of gift; and the stranger that comes near shall be put to death.”

The priests’ portion

18:8And Hashem spoke unto Aharon, “Behold, I also have given you the charge of My heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Yisrael; unto you have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to your sons, by an ordinance for ever.

18:9This shall be yours of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, every meal offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render unto Me, shall be most holy for you and for your sons.

18:10In the most holy place shall you eat it; every male shall eat it; it shall be holy unto you.

18:11And this is yours: the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Yisrael; I have given them unto you, and to your sons and to your daughters with you, by a statute for ever; every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.

18:12All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstfruits of them which they shall offer unto Hashem, them have I given you.

18:13And whatever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto Hashem, shall be yours; every one that is clean in your house shall eat of it.

18:14Everything devoted in Yisrael shall be yours.

18:15Everything that opens the womb in all flesh, which they bring unto Hashem, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be yours; nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts you shall redeem.

18:16And those that are to be redeemed, from a month old you shall redeem, according to your valuation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.

18:17But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are holy; you shall sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shall burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto Hashem.

18:18And their flesh shall be yours, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are yours.

18:19All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Yisrael offer unto Hashem, have I given you, and your sons and your daughters with you, by a statute for ever; it is a covenant of salt for ever before Hashem unto you and to your seed with you.”

The tithe for the Levi’im

18:20And Hashem said unto Aharon, “You shall have no inheritance in their land, neither shall you have any part among them; I am your part and your inheritance among the children of Yisrael.

18:21And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Yisrael for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

18:22Neither must the children of Yisrael from now on come near the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.

18:23But the Levi’im shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Yisrael they have no inheritance.

18:24For the tithes of the children of Yisrael, which they offer as a heave offering unto Hashem, I have given to the Levi’im to inherit; therefore I have said unto them, ‘Among the children of Yisrael they shall have no inheritance.’”

The tithe of the tithe

18:25And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,

18:26“Speak unto the Levi’im, and say unto them, ‘When you take of the children of Yisrael the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall offer up a heave offering of it for Hashem, a tenth part of the tithe.

18:27And this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the grain of the threshing floor, and as the fullness of the winepress.

18:28Thus you also shall offer a heave offering unto Hashem of all your tithes, which you receive of the children of Yisrael; and you shall give of it Hashem’s heave offering to Aharon the priest.

18:29Out of all your gifts you shall offer every heave offering of Hashem, of all the best of it, the hallowed part of it out of it.’

18:30Therefore you shall say unto them, ‘When you have heaved the best of it from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levi’im as the increase of the threshing floor, and as the increase of the winepress.

18:31And you shall eat it in every place, you and your households; for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation.

18:32And you shall bear no sin by reason of it, when you have heaved from it the best of it; neither shall you profane the holy things of the children of Yisrael, lest you die.’”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
