Numbers, Chapter 16

Koraḥ, with Datan, Aviram, On and two hundred and fifty princes, rises against Moshe and Aharon; Moshe calls for censers before Hashem, Datan and Aviram refuse to come up, the earth opens and swallows them with all that belonged to Koraḥ, and fire consumes the two hundred and fifty.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 16:36–50 of most English Bibles are 17:1–15 here.

The rebellion of Koraḥ

16:1Now Koraḥ (Korah), the son of Yitzhar (Izhar), the son of Kehat (Kohath), the son of Levi, and Datan (Dathan) and Aviram (Abiram), the sons of Eliav (Eliab), and On, the son of Pelet (Peleth), sons of Reuven (Reuben), took men;

16:2and they rose up before Moshe (Moses), with certain of the children of Yisrael (Israel), two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown;

16:3and they gathered themselves together against Moshe and against Aharon (Aaron), and said unto them, “You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Hashem is among them; why then do you lift yourselves up above the congregation of Hashem?”

16:4And when Moshe heard it, he fell upon his face;

16:5and he spoke unto Koraḥ and unto all his company, saying, “Even tomorrow Hashem will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He has chosen will He cause to come near unto Him.

16:6This do: take censers, Koraḥ, and all his company;

16:7and put fire in them, and put incense in them before Hashem tomorrow; and it shall be that the man whom Hashem chooses, he shall be holy. You take too much upon you, you sons of Levi.”

16:8And Moshe said unto Koraḥ, “Hear, I pray you, you sons of Levi:

16:9does it seem but a small thing unto you, that the God of Yisrael has separated you from the congregation of Yisrael, to bring you near to Himself to do the service of the tabernacle of Hashem, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?

16:10And He has brought you near to Him, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you; and do you seek the priesthood also?

16:11For which cause both you and all your company are gathered together against Hashem; and what is Aharon, that you murmur against him?”

Written and read. Written תלונו, read תַלִּ֖ינוּ. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).
Datan and Aviram refuse

16:12And Moshe sent to call Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav; and they said, “We will not come up.

16:13Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land that flows with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself altogether a prince over us?

16:14Moreover you have not brought us into a land that flows with milk and honey, nor given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards; will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”

16:15And Moshe was very angry, and said unto Hashem, “Do not respect their offering; I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them.”

The censers before Hashem

16:16And Moshe said unto Koraḥ, “Be you and all your company before Hashem, you, and they, and Aharon, tomorrow;

16:17and take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring before Hashem every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aharon, each of you his censer.”

16:18And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense on them, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moshe and Aharon.

16:19And Koraḥ gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and the glory of Hashem appeared unto all the congregation.

16:20And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,

16:21“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”

16:22And they fell upon their faces, and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will You be angry with all the congregation?”

Depart from the tents

16:23And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

16:24“Speak unto the congregation, saying, ‘Get up from about the tabernacle of Koraḥ, Datan, and Aviram.’”

16:25And Moshe rose up and went unto Datan and Aviram; and the elders of Yisrael followed him.

16:26And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, “Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.”

16:27So they got up from the tabernacle of Koraḥ, Datan, and Aviram, on every side; and Datan and Aviram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

16:28And Moshe said, “Hereby you shall know that Hashem has sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of my own mind.

16:29If these men die the common death of all men, or if they are visited after the visitation of all men, then Hashem has not sent me.

16:30But if Hashem makes a new thing, and the earth opens her mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the pit, then you shall understand that these men have provoked Hashem.”

The earth opens her mouth

16:31And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split apart that was under them;

16:32and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that belonged unto Koraḥ, and all their goods.

16:33They, and all that belonged to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them; and they perished from among the congregation.

16:34And all Yisrael that were round about them fled at their cry; for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up also.”

16:35And there came out a fire from Hashem, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
