Leviticus, Chapter 8

Before the gathered congregation Moshe washes and clothes Aharon in the priestly garments, anoints the tabernacle, the altar and Aharon, and offers the bullock of the sin offering, the ram of the burnt offering and the ram of consecration, then charges Aharon and his sons to stay at the door seven days.

The congregation gathered

8:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,

8:2“Take Aharon (Aaron) and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;

8:3and gather all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.”

8:4And Moshe did as Hashem commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

8:5And Moshe said unto the congregation, “This is the thing which Hashem commanded to be done.”

Aharon robed and anointed

8:6And Moshe brought Aharon and his sons, and washed them with water.

8:7And he put upon him the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and bound it unto him with it.

8:8And he put the breastplate upon him; also he put in the breastplate the Urim and the Thummim.

8:9And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his forefront, he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as Hashem commanded Moshe.

8:10And Moshe took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and sanctified them.

8:11And he sprinkled of it upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its vessels, both the laver and its foot, to sanctify them.

8:12And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aharon’s head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

8:13And Moshe brought Aharon’s sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put caps upon them; as Hashem commanded Moshe.

The sin offering and burnt offering

8:14And he brought the bullock for the sin offering; and Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.

8:15And he slew it; and Moshe took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make atonement upon it.

8:16And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moshe burned it upon the altar.

8:17But the bullock, and its hide, its flesh, and its dung, he burnt with fire outside the camp; as Hashem commanded Moshe.

8:18And he brought the ram for the burnt offering; and Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

8:19And he killed it; and Moshe sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

8:20And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moshe burnt the head, and the pieces, and the fat.

8:21And he washed the inwards and the legs in water; and Moshe burnt the whole ram upon the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savor, and an offering made by fire unto Hashem; as Hashem commanded Moshe.

The ram of consecration

8:22And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration; and Aharon and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

8:23And he slew it; and Moshe took of its blood, and put it upon the tip of Aharon’s right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

8:24And he brought Aharon’s sons, and Moshe put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet; and Moshe sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

8:25And he took the fat, and the rump, and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder;

8:26and out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before Hashem, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder;

8:27and he put all upon Aharon’s hands, and upon his sons’ hands, and waved them for a wave offering before Hashem.

8:28And Moshe took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering. They were consecrations for a sweet savor; it is an offering made by fire unto Hashem.

8:29And Moshe took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before Hashem; for of the ram of consecration it was Moshe’s part; as Hashem commanded Moshe.

8:30And Moshe took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aharon, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons’ garments with him; and sanctified Aharon, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him.

Seven days at the door

8:31And Moshe said unto Aharon and to his sons, “Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aharon and his sons shall eat it.’

8:32And that which remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire.

8:33And you shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration are at an end; for seven days he shall consecrate you.

8:34As he has done this day, so Hashem has commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

8:35Therefore you shall abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of Hashem, that you do not die; for so I am commanded.”

8:36So Aharon and his sons did all things which Hashem commanded by the hand of Moshe.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
