Text (469) 608-9944Leviticus, Chapter 9
On the eighth day Aharon offers the sin offering and burnt offering for himself and then the offerings of the people; he and Moshe bless the people, the glory of Hashem appears, and fire comes out from before Hashem and consumes the offering on the altar.
9:1And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moshe (Moses) called Aharon (Aaron) and his sons, and the elders of Yisrael (Israel);
9:2and he said unto Aharon, “Take a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before Hashem.
9:3And unto the children of Yisrael you shall speak, saying, ‘Take a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;
9:4also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before Hashem; and a meal offering mingled with oil; for today Hashem will appear unto you.’”
9:5And they brought that which Moshe commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation; and all the congregation drew near and stood before Hashem.
9:6And Moshe said, “This is the thing which Hashem commanded that you should do; and the glory of Hashem shall appear unto you.”
9:7And Moshe said unto Aharon, “Go unto the altar, and offer your sin offering, and your burnt offering, and make an atonement for yourself, and for the people; and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as Hashem commanded.”
9:8Aharon therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.
9:9And the sons of Aharon brought the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar.
9:10But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as Hashem commanded Moshe.
9:11And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire outside the camp.
9:12And he slew the burnt offering; and Aharon’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.
9:13And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with its pieces, and the head; and he burnt them upon the altar.
9:14And he washed the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.
9:15And he brought the people’s offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first.
9:16And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner.
9:17And he brought the meal offering, and took a handful of it, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.
9:18He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people; and Aharon’s sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about,
9:19and the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that which covers the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver;
9:20and they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar.
9:21And the breasts and the right shoulder Aharon waved for a wave offering before Hashem; as Moshe commanded.
9:22And Aharon lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings.
9:23And Moshe and Aharon went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of Hashem appeared unto all the people.
9:24And there came a fire out from before Hashem, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
