Leviticus, Chapter 7

The law of the trespass offering and the priests’ portions, the law of the peace offerings for thanksgiving, vows and freewill offerings, the ban on eating fat and blood, the wave breast and right shoulder given to Aharon and his sons, and a closing summary of the laws commanded at Mount Sinai.

The law of the trespass offering

7:1“Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy.

7:2In the place where they kill the burnt offering they shall kill the trespass offering; and its blood he shall sprinkle round about upon the altar.

7:3And he shall offer of it all its fat: the rump, and the fat that covers the inwards,

7:4and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the kidneys, he shall take away;

7:5and the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto Hashem. It is a trespass offering.

7:6Every male among the priests shall eat of it; it shall be eaten in the holy place; it is most holy.

7:7As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering; there is one law for them: the priest that makes atonement with it shall have it.

The priests’ share

7:8And the priest that offers any man’s burnt offering, even the priest shall have for himself the skin of the burnt offering which he has offered.

7:9And all the meal offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is prepared in the frying pan, and in the pan, shall be the priest’s that offers it.

7:10And every meal offering, mingled with oil, and dry, all the sons of Aharon (Aaron) shall have, one as much as another.

The law of the peace offerings

7:11And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto Hashem.

7:12If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.

7:13Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.

7:14And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation for a heave offering unto Hashem, and it shall be the priest’s that sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings.

7:15And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning.

7:16But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow, or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice; and on the next day also the remainder of it shall be eaten.

7:17But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.

7:18And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offers it; it shall be an abomination, and the soul that eats of it shall bear his iniquity.

7:19And the flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire. And as for the flesh, all that are clean shall eat of it.

7:20But the soul that eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that belong unto Hashem, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.

7:21Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any abominable unclean thing, and eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which belong unto Hashem, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.’”

No fat and no blood

7:22And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses), saying,

7:23“Speak unto the children of Yisrael (Israel), saying, ‘You shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.

7:24And the fat of the beast that dies of itself, and the fat of that which is torn by beasts, may be used in any other use; but you shall in no wise eat of it.

7:25For whoever eats the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto Hashem, even the soul that eats it shall be cut off from his people.

7:26Moreover you shall eat no manner of blood, whether it is of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.

7:27Whatever soul it is that eats any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.’”

The portion of Aharon and his sons

7:28And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

7:29“Speak unto the children of Yisrael, saying, ‘He that offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto Hashem shall bring his oblation unto Hashem of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.

7:30His own hands shall bring the offerings of Hashem made by fire: the fat with the breast, he shall bring it, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before Hashem.

7:31And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar; but the breast shall be Aharon’s and his sons’.

7:32And the right shoulder you shall give unto the priest for a heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.

7:33He among the sons of Aharon that offers the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder for his part.

7:34For the wave breast and the heave shoulder I have taken of the children of Yisrael from off the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them unto Aharon the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Yisrael.’”

7:35This is the portion of the anointing of Aharon, and of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of Hashem made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto Hashem in the priest’s office,

7:36which Hashem commanded to be given them of the children of Yisrael, in the day that He anointed them, by a statute for ever throughout their generations.

Summary of the offerings

7:37This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meal offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings,

7:38which Hashem commanded Moshe in Mount Sinai, in the day that He commanded the children of Yisrael to offer their oblations unto Hashem, in the wilderness of Sinai.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
