Leviticus, Chapter 11

Hashem gives Moshe and Aharon the laws of clean and unclean creatures: beasts that part the hoof and chew the cud, water creatures with fins and scales, forbidden fowls, winged creeping things, and creeping things whose carcasses defile, ending with the call to be holy, for Hashem is holy.

Clean and unclean beasts

11:1And Hashem spoke unto Moshe (Moses) and to Aharon (Aaron), saying unto them,

11:2“Speak unto the children of Yisrael (Israel), saying, ‘These are the beasts which you shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

11:3Whatever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that you shall eat.

11:4Nevertheless these you shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: the camel, because it chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean unto you.

11:5And the coney, because it chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean unto you.

11:6And the hare, because it chews the cud, but does not divide the hoof; it is unclean unto you.

11:7And the swine, though it divides the hoof, and is cloven-footed, yet it does not chew the cud; it is unclean to you.

11:8Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcass you shall not touch; they are unclean to you.

Creatures of the waters

11:9These you shall eat of all that are in the waters: whatever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them you shall eat.

11:10And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you;

11:11they shall be even an abomination unto you; you shall not eat of their flesh, but you shall have their carcasses in abomination.

11:12Whatever has no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Unclean fowls

11:13And these are they which you shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey,

11:14and the vulture, and the kite after its kind;

11:15every raven after its kind;

11:16and the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after its kind,

11:17and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

11:18and the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

11:19and the stork, the heron after its kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

Flying creeping things

11:20All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

11:21Yet these you may eat of every flying creeping thing that goes upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap with upon the earth:

Written and read. Written לא, read ל֤וֹ. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

11:22even these of them you may eat; the locust after its kind, and the bald locust after its kind, and the beetle after its kind, and the grasshopper after its kind.

11:23But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

Uncleanness from carcasses

11:24And for these you shall be unclean: whoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until the evening.

11:25And whoever bears anything of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening.

11:26The carcasses of every beast which divides the hoof, and is not cloven-footed, nor chews the cud, are unclean unto you; everyone that touches them shall be unclean.

11:27And whatever goes upon its paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you; whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening.

11:28And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean unto you.

11:29These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after its kind,

11:30and the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

11:31These are unclean to you among all that creep; whoever touches them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening.

11:32And upon whatever any of them, when they are dead, falls, it shall be unclean; whether it is any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatever vessel it is, in which any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; so it shall be cleansed.

11:33And every earthen vessel, into which any of them falls, whatever is in it shall be unclean; and you shall break it.

11:34Of all food which may be eaten, that on which such water comes shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.

11:35And everything upon which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether it is oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down; for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you.

11:36Nevertheless a fountain or pit, in which there is plenty of water, shall be clean; but that which touches their carcass shall be unclean.

11:37And if any part of their carcass falls upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

11:38But if any water is put upon the seed, and any part of their carcass falls on it, it shall be unclean unto you.

11:42Whatever goes upon the belly, and whatever goes upon all four, or whatever has more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them you shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

11:43You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps, neither shall you make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled by them.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Leviticus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5 and 6; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
