Joshua, Chapter 4

Twelve men, one from each tribe, take twelve stones out of the midst of the Yarden as a memorial; the priests come up with the ark and the waters return to their place; Israel camps at Gilgal on the tenth day of the first month, and Yehoshua sets up the stones there as a sign for their children.

4:1And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Yarden (Jordan), that Hashem spoke unto Yehoshua (Joshua), saying,

4:2“Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,

4:3And command you them, saying, ‘Take you hence out of the midst of Yarden, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and you shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where you shall lodge this night.’”

4:4Then Yehoshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:

4:5And Yehoshua said unto them, “Pass over before the ark of Hashem your God into the midst of Yarden, and take you up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:

4:6That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What mean you by these stones?’

4:7Then you shall answer them, ‘That the waters of Yarden were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Hashem; when it passed over Yarden, the waters of Yarden were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.’”

4:8And the children of Israel did so as Yehoshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Yarden, as Hashem spoke unto Yehoshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

4:9And Yehoshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Yarden, in the place where the feet of the priests which bore the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.

The people pass over

4:10For the priests which bore the ark stood in the midst of Yarden, until every thing was finished that Hashem commanded Yehoshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moshe (Moses) commanded Yehoshua: and the people hasted and passed over.

4:11And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of Hashem passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.

4:12And the children of Re’uven (Reuben), and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Menashe (Manasseh), passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moshe spoke unto them:

4:13About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before Hashem unto battle, to the plains of Yericho (Jericho).

4:14On that day Hashem magnified Yehoshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moshe, all the days of his life.

The waters return

4:15And Hashem spoke unto Yehoshua, saying,

4:16“Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Yarden.”

4:17Yehoshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come you up out of Yarden.”

4:18And it came to pass, when the priests that bore the ark of the covenant of Hashem were come up out of the midst of Yarden, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Yarden returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.

The twelve stones at Gilgal

4:19And the people came up out of Yarden on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Yericho.

4:20And those twelve stones, which they took out of Yarden, did Yehoshua pitch in Gilgal.

4:21And he spoke unto the children of Israel, saying, “When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What mean these stones?’

4:22Then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel came over this Yarden on dry land.’

4:23For Hashem your God dried up the waters of Yarden from before you, until you were passed over, as Hashem your God did to Yam Suf (the Red sea), which He dried up from before us, until we were gone over:

4:24That all the people of the earth might know the hand of Hashem, that it is mighty: that you might fear Hashem your God for ever.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Joshua they are the same as in most English Bibles.
