Text (469) 608-9944Joshua, Chapter 3
Israel comes from Shittim to the Yarden; the priests carry the ark of the covenant before the people, Hashem promises to magnify Yehoshua, and when the priests’ feet touch the water the river stands up in a heap and all Israel passes over on dry ground right against Yericho.
3:1And Yehoshua (Joshua) rose early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to Yarden (Jordan), he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they passed over.
3:2And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;
3:3And they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of Hashem your God, and the priests the Levi’im (Levites) bearing it, then you shall remove from your place, and go after it.
3:4Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that you may know the way by which you must go: for you have not passed this way heretofore.”
3:5And Yehoshua said unto the people, “Sanctify yourselves: for tomorrow Hashem will do wonders among you.”
3:6And Yehoshua spoke unto the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people.” And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.
3:7And Hashem said unto Yehoshua, “This day will I begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moshe (Moses), so I will be with you.
3:8And you shall command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you are come to the brink of the water of Yarden, you shall stand still in Yarden.’”
3:9And Yehoshua said unto the children of Israel, “Come hither, and hear the words of Hashem your God.”
3:10And Yehoshua said, “Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will without fail drive out from before you the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and the Chitti (Hittites), and the Chivi (Hivites), and the Perizzi (Perizzites), and the Girgashi (Girgashites), and the Emori (Amorites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites).
3:11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into Yarden.
3:12Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
3:13And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of Hashem, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Yarden, that the waters of Yarden shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap.”
3:14And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Yarden, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people;
3:15And as they that bore the ark were come unto Yarden, and the feet of the priests that bore the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Yarden overflows all his banks all the time of harvest,)
3:16That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Tzartan (Zaretan): and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Yericho (Jericho).
3:17And the priests that bore the ark of the covenant of Hashem stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Yarden, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Yarden.

Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.

- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Joshua they are the same as in most English Bibles.
