Joshua, Chapter 5

The kings of the Emori and the Kena’ani lose heart; Yehoshua circumcises at Gilgal the generation born in the wilderness, Israel keeps the passover in the plains of Yericho and eats of the grain of the land, the manna ceases, and the captain of the host of Hashem appears to Yehoshua.

5:1And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Emori (Amorites), which were on the side of Yarden (Jordan) westward, and all the kings of the Kena’ani (Canaanites), which were by the sea, heard that Hashem had dried up the waters of Yarden from before the children of Israel, until they were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.

Circumcision at Gilgal

5:2At that time Hashem said unto Yehoshua (Joshua), “Make you sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.”

5:3And Yehoshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.

5:4And this is the cause why Yehoshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Mitzrayim.

5:5Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Mitzrayim, them they had not circumcised.

5:6For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Mitzrayim, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of Hashem: unto whom Hashem swore that He would not show them the land, which Hashem swore unto their fathers that He would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

5:7And their children, whom He raised up in their stead, them Yehoshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.

5:8And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.

5:9And Hashem said unto Yehoshua, “This day have I rolled away the reproach of Mitzrayim from off you.” Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.

The passover in the plains of Yericho

5:10And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Yericho (Jericho).

5:11And they did eat of the old grain of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched grain in the selfsame day.

5:12And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old grain of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Kena’an (Canaan) that year.

The captain of Hashem’s host

5:13And it came to pass, when Yehoshua was by Yericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Yehoshua went unto him, and said unto him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

5:14And he said, “Nay; but as captain of the host of Hashem am I now come.” And Yehoshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, “What says my lord unto his servant?”

5:15And the captain of Hashem’s host said unto Yehoshua, “Loose your shoe from off your foot; for the place whereon you stand is holy.” And Yehoshua did so.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
