Text (469) 608-9944Job, Chapter 3
Iyov opens his mouth and curses the day he was born and the night he was conceived, asks why he did not die from the womb and lie at rest in the grave with kings and prisoners, and why light is given to those in misery.
3:1After this opened Iyov (Job) his mouth, and cursed his day.
3:2And Iyov spoke, and said,
3:3“Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, ‘There is a man child conceived.’
3:4Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it.
3:5Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
3:6As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
3:7Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come therein.
3:8Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning.
3:9Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day:
3:10Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes.
3:11Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?
3:12Why did the knees receive me? or why the breasts that I should suck?
3:13For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
3:14With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves;
3:15Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
3:16Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
3:17There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.
3:18There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor.
3:19The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
3:20Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;
3:21Which long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
3:22Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?
3:23Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God has hedged in?
3:24For my sighing comes before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.
3:25For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
3:26I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
