Text (469) 608-9944Job, Chapter 2
Satan comes again before Hashem and is given power over Iyov’s body; Iyov is struck with sore boils and will not curse God as his wife urges, and his three friends Elifaz, Bildad and Tzofar come and sit with him seven days in silence.
2:1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Hashem, and Satan came also among them to present himself before Hashem.
2:2And Hashem said unto Satan, “From whence come you?” And Satan answered Hashem, and said, “From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
2:3And Hashem said unto Satan, “Have you considered My servant Iyov (Job), that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God, and eschews evil? and still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved Me against him, to destroy him without cause.”
2:4And Satan answered Hashem, and said, “Skin for skin, yea, all that a man has will he give for his life.
2:5But put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse You to Your face.”
2:6And Hashem said unto Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; but save his life.”
2:7So went Satan forth from the presence of Hashem, and struck Iyov with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
2:8And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes.
2:9Then said his wife unto him, “Do you still retain your integrity? curse God, and die.”
2:10But he said unto her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this did not Iyov sin with his lips.
2:11Now when Iyov’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Elifaz (Eliphaz) the Temani (Temanite), and Bildad the Shuchi (Shuhite), and Tzofar (Zophar) the Na’amati (Naamathite): for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
2:12And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
2:13So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Job they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 40 and 41; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
