Isaiah, Chapter 64

The people’s prayer goes on: may Hashem make His name known so that the nations tremble, as when He did terrible things of old; they confess that they are all as an unclean thing, call Hashem their father and potter, and plead over the holy cities, Tziyon and Yerushalayim, and the house burned with fire.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 1 here is 64:2 in most English Bibles, so each verse here is one lower than there.

64:1As when the melting fire burns, the fire causes the waters to boil, to make Your name known to Your adversaries, that the nations may tremble at Your presence!

64:2When You did terrible things which we looked not for, You came down, the mountains flowed down at Your presence.

64:3For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, O God, beside You, what He has prepared for him that waits for Him.

64:4You meet him that rejoices and works righteousness, those that remember You in Your ways: behold, You are angry; for we have sinned: in those is continuance, and we shall be saved.

As an unclean thing

64:5But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

64:6And there is none that calls upon Your name, that stirs up himself to take hold of You: for You have hid Your face from us, and have consumed us, because of our iniquities.

You are our father

64:7But now, O Hashem, You are our father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and we all are the work of Your hand.

64:8Be not angry very sore, O Hashem, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech You, we are all Your people.

64:9Your holy cities are a wilderness, Tziyon (Zion) is a wilderness, Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) a desolation.

64:10Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised You, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.

64:11Will You refrain Yourself for these things, O Hashem? will You hold Your peace, and afflict us very sore?

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
