Tenakh Study · Isaiah 63:1–19

Isaiah, Chapter 63

One comes from Edom with dyed garments from Botzrah, who has trodden the winepress alone in His anger; the prophet recalls the lovingkindnesses of Hashem toward Israel in the days of Moshe, and the people plead with Hashem, their father and redeemer, to look down from heaven and come down.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verse 19 here also contains 64:1 of most English Bibles (“Oh that You would rend the heavens…”).

63:1Who is this that comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Botzrah (Bozrah)? this that is glorious in His apparel, travelling in the greatness of His strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

63:2Wherefore are You red in Your apparel, and Your garments like him that treads in the winefat?

63:3I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with Me: for I will tread them in My anger, and trample them in My fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon My garments, and I will stain all My raiment.

63:4For the day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed is come.

63:5And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore My own arm brought salvation unto Me; and My fury, it upheld Me.

63:6And I will tread down the people in My anger, and make them drunk in My fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

The lovingkindnesses of Hashem

63:7I will mention the lovingkindnesses of Hashem, and the praises of Hashem, according to all that Hashem has bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which He has bestowed on them according to His mercies, and according to the multitude of His lovingkindnesses.

63:8For He said, “Surely they are My people, children that will not lie”: so He was their Saviour.

63:9In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them: in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bore them, and carried them all the days of old.

63:10But they rebelled, and vexed His holy Spirit: therefore He was turned to be their enemy, and He fought against them.

63:11Then he remembered the days of old, Moshe (Moses), and his people, saying, “Where is He that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of His flock? where is He that put His holy Spirit within him?

63:12That led them by the right hand of Moshe with His glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make Himself an everlasting name?

63:13That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?”

63:14As a beast goes down into the valley, the Spirit of Hashem caused him to rest: so did You lead Your people, to make Yourself a glorious name.

Look down from heaven

63:15Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of Your holiness and of Your glory: where is Your zeal and Your strength, the sounding of Your bowels and of Your mercies toward me? are they restrained?

63:16Doubtless You are our father, though Avraham (Abraham) be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: You, O Hashem, are our father, our redeemer; Your name is from everlasting.

63:17O Hashem, why have You made us to err from Your ways, and hardened our heart from Your fear? Return for Your servants’ sake, the tribes of Your inheritance.

63:18The people of Your holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down Your sanctuary.

63:19We are Yours: You never bore rule over them; they were not called by Your name. Oh that You would rend the heavens, that You would come down, that the mountains might flow down at Your presence,

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
