Isaiah, Chapter 65

Hashem is found by those who did not seek Him, while a rebellious people provokes Him with idolatry; for the sake of His servants He will not destroy them all, those who forsake Him are given to the sword, and He creates new heavens and a new earth, with joy, long life and peace in Yerushalayim.

65:1I am sought of them that asked not for Me; I am found of them that sought Me not: I said, “Behold Me, behold Me,” unto a nation that was not called by My name.

65:2I have spread out My hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walks in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

65:3A people that provokes Me to anger continually to My face; that sacrifices in gardens, and burns incense upon altars of brick;

65:4Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

65:5Which say, “Stand by yourself, come not near to me; for I am holier than you.” These are a smoke in My nose, a fire that burns all the day.

65:6Behold, it is written before Me: I will not keep silence, but will recompense, even recompense into their bosom,

65:7Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, says Hashem, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed Me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

A blessing is in it

65:8Thus says Hashem, “As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it’: so will I do for My servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.

65:9And I will bring forth a seed out of Ya’akov (Jacob), and out of Yehudah (Judah) an inheritor of My mountains: and My elect shall inherit it, and My servants shall dwell there.

65:10And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for My people that have sought Me.

65:11But you are they that forsake Hashem, that forget My holy mountain, that prepare a table for Gad (that troop), and that furnish the drink offering unto Meni (that number).

65:12Therefore will I number you to the sword, and you shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, you did not answer; when I spoke, you did not hear; but did evil before My eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.”

My servants shall eat

65:13Therefore thus says the Lord Hashem, “Behold, My servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry: behold, My servants shall drink, but you shall be thirsty: behold, My servants shall rejoice, but you shall be ashamed:

65:14Behold, My servants shall sing for joy of heart, but you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

65:15And you shall leave your name for a curse unto My chosen: for the Lord Hashem shall slay you, and call His servants by another name:

65:16That he who blesses himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that swears in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from My eyes.

New heavens and a new earth

65:17For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

65:18But be you glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) a rejoicing, and her people a joy.

65:19And I will rejoice in Yerushalayim, and joy in My people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

65:20There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that has not filled his days: for the child shall die a hundred years old; but the sinner being a hundred years old shall be accursed.

65:21And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

65:22They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of My people, and My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.

65:23They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of Hashem, and their offspring with them.

65:24And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.

65:25The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, says Hashem.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
