Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 51
Hashem calls those who seek Him to look to Avraham and Sarah and promises to comfort Tziyon, for His salvation shall be for ever; the arm of Hashem is called to awake as in the days of old, and Yerushalayim, who has drunk the cup of His fury, is told that it shall pass to those who afflict her.
51:1Hearken to Me, you that follow after righteousness, you that seek Hashem: look unto the rock whence you are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence you are digged.
51:2Look unto Avraham (Abraham) your father, and unto Sarah that bore you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.
51:3For Hashem shall comfort Tziyon (Zion): He will comfort all her waste places; and He will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of Hashem; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.
51:4Hearken unto Me, My people; and give ear unto Me, O My nation: for a Torah shall proceed from Me, and I will make My judgment to rest for a light of the people.
51:5My righteousness is near; My salvation is gone forth, and My arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon Me, and on My arm shall they trust.
51:6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but My salvation shall be for ever, and My righteousness shall not be abolished.
51:7Hearken unto Me, you that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My Torah; fear you not the reproach of men, neither be you afraid of their revilings.
51:8For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but My righteousness shall be for ever, and My salvation from generation to generation.
51:9Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Hashem; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Are You not it that has cut Rahav (Rahab), and wounded the dragon?
51:10Are You not it which has dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; that has made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?
51:11Therefore the redeemed of Hashem shall return, and come with singing unto Tziyon; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.
51:12I, even I, am He that comforts you: who are you, that you should be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;
51:13And forget Hashem your maker, that has stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and have feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?
51:14The captive exile hastens that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
51:15But I am Hashem your God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: Hashem of hosts is His name.
51:16And I have put My words in your mouth, and I have covered you in the shadow of My hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Tziyon, “You are My people.”
51:17Awake, awake, stand up, O Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), which have drunk at the hand of Hashem the cup of His fury; you have drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.
51:18There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she has brought forth; neither is there any that takes her by the hand of all the sons that she has brought up.
51:19These two things are come unto you; who shall be sorry for you? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort you?
51:20Your sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of Hashem, the rebuke of your God.
51:21Therefore hear now this, you afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
51:22Thus says your Lord Hashem, and your God that pleads the cause of His people, “Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of My fury; you shall no more drink it again:
51:23But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict you; which have said to your soul, ‘Bow down, that we may go over’: and you have laid your body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
