Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 50
Hashem asks where is the bill of their mother’s divorcement, for they were sold for their own iniquities, and His hand is not shortened; the servant, taught by the Lord Hashem, gives his back to the smiters and trusts that He will help him; whoever walks in darkness is to trust in the name of Hashem.
50:1Thus says Hashem, “Where is the bill of your mother’s divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of My creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have you sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
50:2Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is My hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at My rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinks, because there is no water, and dies for thirst.
50:3I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.”
50:4The Lord Hashem has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: He wakens morning by morning, He wakens my ear to hear as the learned.
50:5The Lord Hashem has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.
50:6I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
50:7For the Lord Hashem will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
50:8He is near that justifies me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is my adversary? let him come near to me.
50:9Behold, the Lord Hashem will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.
50:10Who is among you that fears Hashem, that obeys the voice of His servant, that walks in darkness, and has no light? let him trust in the name of Hashem, and stay upon his God.
50:11Behold, all you that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that you have kindled. This shall you have of My hand; you shall lie down in sorrow.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
