Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 52
Tziyon and Yerushalayim are called to awake and shake themselves from the dust, for Hashem redeems His people without money; the feet of him that brings good tidings are beautiful upon the mountains, the exiles are told to depart and be clean, and Hashem’s servant shall be exalted and very high.
52:1Awake, awake; put on your strength, O Tziyon (Zion); put on your beautiful garments, O Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into you the uncircumcised and the unclean.
52:2Shake yourself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Yerushalayim: loose yourself from the bands of your neck, O captive daughter of Tziyon.
52:3For thus says Hashem, “You have sold yourselves for nought; and you shall be redeemed without money.”
52:4For thus says the Lord Hashem, “My people went down aforetime into Mitzrayim (Egypt) to sojourn there; and Ashur (the Assyrian) oppressed them without cause.
52:5Now therefore, what have I here, says Hashem, that My people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, says Hashem; and My name continually every day is blasphemed.
52:6Therefore My people shall know My name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am He that does speak: behold, it is I.”
52:7How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace; that brings good tidings of good, that publishes salvation; that says unto Tziyon, “Your God reigns!”
52:8Your watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when Hashem shall bring again Tziyon.
52:9Break forth into joy, sing together, you waste places of Yerushalayim: for Hashem has comforted His people, He has redeemed Yerushalayim.
52:10Hashem has made bare His holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
52:11Depart you, depart you, go you out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go you out of the midst of her; be you clean, that bear the vessels of Hashem.
52:12For you shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for Hashem will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.
52:13Behold, My servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
52:14As many were astonied at you; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:
52:15So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
