Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 41
Hashem calls the islands to judgment over the one He raised up from the east; He tells Israel, His servant and the seed of Avraham His friend, not to fear, promises water and trees in the wilderness, and challenges the idols to declare what is to come.
41:1Keep silence before Me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.
41:2Who raised up the righteous man from the east, called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him rule over kings? he gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow.
41:3He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet.
41:4Who has wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I Hashem, the first, and with the last; I am He.
41:5The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came.
41:6They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, “Be of good courage.”
41:7So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smooths with the hammer him that struck the anvil, saying, “It is ready for the sodering”: and he fastened it with nails, that it should not be moved.
41:8But you, Israel, are My servant, Ya’akov (Jacob) whom I have chosen, the seed of Avraham (Abraham) My friend.
41:9You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called you from the chief men thereof, and said unto you, “You are My servant; I have chosen you, and not cast you away.”
41:10Fear you not; for I am with you: be not dismayed; for I am your God: I will strengthen you; yea, I will help you; yea, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.
41:11Behold, all they that were incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with you shall perish.
41:12You shall seek them, and shall not find them, even them that contended with you: they that war against you shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.
41:13For I Hashem your God will hold your right hand, saying unto you, “Fear not; I will help you.”
41:14Fear not, you worm Ya’akov, and you men of Israel; I will help you, says Hashem, and your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
41:15Behold, I will make you a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: you shall thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shall make the hills as chaff.
41:16You shall fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and you shall rejoice in Hashem, and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.
41:17When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue fails for thirst, I Hashem will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.
41:18I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
41:19I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together:
41:20That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of Hashem has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.
41:21Produce your cause, says Hashem; bring forth your strong reasons, says the King of Ya’akov.
41:22Let them bring them forth, and show us what shall happen: let them show the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.
41:23Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.
41:24Behold, you are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooses you.
41:25I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon My name: and he shall come upon princes as upon morter, and as the potter treads clay.
41:26Who has declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, “He is righteous”? yea, there is none that shows, yea, there is none that declares, yea, there is none that hears your words.
41:27The first shall say to Tziyon (Zion), “Behold, behold them”: and I will give to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) one that brings good tidings.
41:28For I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
41:29Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their molten images are wind and confusion.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
