Isaiah, Chapter 39

ישעיהו לט

Merodach-Bal’adan king of Bavel sends letters and a present to Chizkiyahu after his sickness, Chizkiyahu shows the envoys all his treasures, and Yesha’yahu foretells that all in his house and some of his sons will be carried to Bavel.

39:1At that time Merodach-Bal’adan (Merodach-baladan), the son of Bal’adan (Baladan), king of Bavel (Babylon), sent letters and a present to Chizkiyahu (Hezekiah): for he had heard that he had been sick, and was recovered.

39:2And Chizkiyahu was glad of them, and showed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Chizkiyahu showed them not.

Yesha’yahu questions the king

39:3Then came Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) the prophet unto king Chizkiyahu, and said unto him, “What said these men? and from whence came they unto you?” And Chizkiyahu said, “They are come from a far country unto me, even from Bavel.”

39:4Then said he, “What have they seen in your house?” And Chizkiyahu answered, “All that is in my house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not showed them.”

All shall be carried to Bavel

39:5Then said Yesha’yahu to Chizkiyahu, “Hear the word of Hashem of hosts:

הוַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְשַׁעְיָ֖הוּ אֶל־חִזְקִיָּ֑הוּ שְׁמַ֖ע דְּבַר־יְהוָ֥ה צְבָאֽוֹת׃

39:6Behold, the days come, that all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Bavel: nothing shall be left, says Hashem.

39:7And of your sons that shall issue from you, which you shall beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Bavel.”

זוּמִבָּנֶ֜יךָ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יֵצְא֧וּ מִמְּךָ֛ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תּוֹלִ֖יד יִקָּ֑חוּ וְהָיוּ֙ סָרִיסִ֔ים בְּהֵיכַ֖ל מֶ֥לֶךְ בָּבֶֽל׃

39:8Then said Chizkiyahu to Yesha’yahu, “Good is the word of Hashem which you have spoken.” He said moreover, “For there shall be peace and truth in my days.”

חוַיֹּ֤אמֶר חִזְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אֶֽל־יְשַׁעְיָ֔הוּ ט֥וֹב דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּ֑רְתָּ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֥י יִהְיֶ֛ה שָׁל֥וֹם וֶאֱמֶ֖ת בְּיָמָֽי׃

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
