Isaiah, Chapter 38

Chizkiyahu falls sick unto death and prays, and Hashem adds fifteen years to his life and gives the sign of the shadow going back ten degrees on the dial of Achaz; Chizkiyahu’s writing after his recovery tells of his distress and his praise, and the chapter closes with the lump of figs and his question about the sign.

Chizkiyahu’s sickness and prayer

38:1In those days was Chizkiyahu (Hezekiah) sick unto death. And Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) the prophet the son of Amotz (Amoz) came unto him, and said unto him, “Thus says Hashem, ‘Set your house in order: for you shall die, and not live.’”

38:2Then Chizkiyahu turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto Hashem,

38:3And said, “Remember now, O Hashem, I beseech You, how I have walked before You in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in Your sight.” And Chizkiyahu wept sore.

38:4Then came the word of Hashem to Yesha’yahu, saying,

38:5“Go, and say to Chizkiyahu, ‘Thus says Hashem, the God of David your father, “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears: behold, I will add unto your days fifteen years.

38:6And I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Ashur (Assyria): and I will defend this city.

The sign of the shadow

38:7And this shall be a sign unto you from Hashem, that Hashem will do this thing that He has spoken;

38:8Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Achaz (Ahaz), ten degrees backward.”’” So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.

The writing of Chizkiyahu

38:9The writing of Chizkiyahu king of Yehudah (Judah), when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:

38:10I said in the cutting off of my days, “I shall go to the gates of the grave: I am deprived of the residue of my years.”

38:11I said, “I shall not see Yah, even Yah, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.”

38:12My age is departed, and is removed from me as a shepherd’s tent: I have cut off like a weaver my life: He will cut me off with pining sickness: from day even to night will You make an end of me.

38:13I reckoned till morning, that, as a lion, so will He break all my bones: from day even to night will You make an end of me.

38:14Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter: I did mourn as a dove: my eyes fail with looking upward: O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.

38:15What shall I say? He has both spoken unto me, and Himself has done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

38:16O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so will You recover me, and make me to live.

38:17Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but You have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

38:18For the grave cannot praise You, death can not celebrate You: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Your truth.

38:19The living, the living, he shall praise You, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known Your truth.

38:20Hashem was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of Hashem.

The lump of figs

38:21For Yesha’yahu had said, “Let them take a lump of figs, and lay it for a plaster upon the boil, and he shall recover.”

38:22Chizkiyahu also had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of Hashem?”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
