Genesis, Chapter 50

Yosef mourns his father, the physicians embalm Yisrael, and a great company goes up to bury him in the cave of Machpelah; Yosef assures his brothers that God meant it for good, and before he dies at a hundred and ten he makes the children of Yisrael swear to carry up his bones.

Yosef mourns his father

50:1And Yosef (Joseph) fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

50:2And Yosef commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Yisrael (Israel).

50:3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of embalming; and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

50:4And when the days of his mourning were past, Yosef spoke unto the house of Par’oh (Pharaoh), saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Par’oh, saying,

50:5My father made me swear, saying, Behold, I die; in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), there you shall bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father, and I will come back.”

50:6And Par’oh said, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.”

The burial in Machpelah

50:7And Yosef went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Par’oh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Mitzrayim,

50:8and all the house of Yosef, and his brothers, and his father’s house; only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

50:9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and it was a very great company.

50:10And they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Yarden (Jordan), and there they mourned with a great and very heavy lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

50:11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Kena’ani (Canaanites), saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning for the Egyptians”; therefore its name was called Avel Mitzrayim (Abel-mizraim), which is beyond the Yarden.

50:12And his sons did unto him as he commanded them;

50:13for his sons carried him into the land of Kena’an, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Avraham (Abraham) bought with the field for a possession of a burial place from Efron (Ephron) the Ḥitti, before Mamre.

50:14And Yosef returned into Mitzrayim, he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

Yosef comforts his brothers

50:15And when Yosef’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Yosef will hate us, and will surely repay us all the evil which we did unto him.”

50:16And they sent a message unto Yosef, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,

50:17So shall you say unto Yosef: Forgive, I pray you now, the transgression of your brothers, and their sin, for they did evil unto you. And now, we pray you, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” And Yosef wept when they spoke unto him.

50:18And his brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

50:19And Yosef said unto them, “Do not fear; for am I in the place of God?

50:20And as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive.

50:21Now therefore do not fear; I will provide for you, and your little ones.” And he comforted them, and spoke kindly unto them.

The death of Yosef

50:22And Yosef dwelt in Mitzrayim, he, and his father’s house; and Yosef lived a hundred and ten years.

50:23And Yosef saw Efrayim’s children of the third generation; the children also of Machir the son of Menasheh (Manasseh) were brought up upon Yosef’s knees.

50:24And Yosef said unto his brothers, “I die; but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land unto the land which He swore to Avraham, to Yitzḥak (Isaac), and to Yaakov (Jacob).”

50:25And Yosef made the children of Yisrael swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”

50:26So Yosef died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Mitzrayim.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
