Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 49
Yaakov gathers his sons and speaks to each in turn, from Reuven to Binyamin, then charges them to bury him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, where Avraham and Sarah, Yitzḥak and Rivkah, and Leah are buried, and breathes his last.
49:1And Yaakov (Jacob) called unto his sons, and said, “Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.
49:2Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Yaakov; and listen unto Yisrael (Israel) your father.
49:3Reuven (Reuben), you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength; the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power.
49:4Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it: he went up to my couch.
49:5Shimon (Simeon) and Levi are brothers; instruments of cruelty are in their dwellings.
49:6O my soul, do not come into their council; unto their assembly, my honor, do not be united; for in their anger they slew a man, and in their self-will they dug down a wall.
49:7Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel; I will divide them in Yaakov, and scatter them in Yisrael.
49:8Yehudah (Judah), you are he whom your brothers shall praise; your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father’s children shall bow down before you.
49:9Yehudah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up; he stooped down, he crouched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
49:10The scepter shall not depart from Yehudah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and unto him shall the gathering of the peoples be.
49:11Binding his foal unto the vine, and his donkey’s colt unto the choice vine; he washes his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes;

49:13Zevulun (Zebulun) shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be a haven for ships; and his border shall be unto Tzidon (Zidon).
49:14Yissachar (Issachar) is a strong donkey, lying down between two burdens;
49:15and he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant under tribute.
49:16Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Yisrael.
49:17Dan shall be a serpent by the way, a viper in the path, that bites the horse’s heels, so that his rider falls backward.
49:18I have waited for Your salvation, O Hashem.
49:19Gad, a troop shall overcome him; but he shall overcome at the last.
49:20Out of Asher his bread shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies.
49:21Naftali (Naphtali) is a hind let loose; he gives goodly words.
49:22Yosef (Joseph) is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a well, whose branches run over the wall.
49:23The archers have bitterly grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him;
49:24but his bow remained firm, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Yaakov; from there is the shepherd, the stone of Yisrael;
49:25by the God of your father, who shall help you; and by the Almighty, who shall bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb.
49:26The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; they shall be on the head of Yosef, and on the crown of the head of him that was set apart from his brothers.
49:27Binyamin (Benjamin) shall tear as a wolf; in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.”
49:28All these are the twelve tribes of Yisrael; and this is what their father spoke unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
49:29And he charged them, and said unto them, “I am to be gathered unto my people; bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Efron (Ephron) the Ḥitti (Hittite),

49:33And when Yaakov had finished commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and breathed his last, and was gathered unto his people.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
