Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 48
Yosef brings Menasheh and Efrayim to his sick father; Yaakov recalls God’s promise at Luz, takes the two sons as his own, lays his right hand on Efrayim the younger, blesses them, and gives Yosef one portion above his brothers.
48:1And it came to pass after these things, that one said to Yosef (Joseph), “Behold, your father is sick”; and he took with him his two sons, Menasheh (Manasseh) and Efrayim (Ephraim).
48:2And one told Yaakov (Jacob), and said, “Behold, your son Yosef is coming unto you”; and Yisrael (Israel) strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.
48:3And Yaakov said unto Yosef, “God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), and blessed me,
48:4and said unto me, Behold, I will make you fruitful, and multiply you, and I will make of you a multitude of peoples; and I will give this land to your seed after you for an everlasting possession.
48:5And now your two sons, who were born unto you in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) before I came unto you into Mitzrayim, are mine; Efrayim and Menasheh, as Reuven (Reuben) and Shimon (Simeon), shall be mine.
48:6And your offspring, whom you beget after them, shall be yours; they shall be called after the name of their brothers in their inheritance.
48:7And as for me, when I came from Paddan (Padan), Raḥel (Rachel) died by me in the land of Kena’an on the way, when there was still some way to come unto Efrat (Ephrath); and I buried her there on the way to Efrat, which is Beit Leḥem (Bethlehem).”
48:8And Yisrael saw Yosef’s sons, and said, “Who are these?”
48:9And Yosef said unto his father, “They are my sons, whom God has given me here.” And he said, “Bring them, I pray you, unto me, and I will bless them.”
48:10Now the eyes of Yisrael were heavy with age, so that he could not see. And he brought them near unto him; and he kissed them, and embraced them.
48:11And Yisrael said unto Yosef, “I did not think to see your face; and, behold, God has shown me your seed also.”
48:12And Yosef brought them out from between his knees, and he bowed down with his face to the earth.
48:13And Yosef took them both, Efrayim in his right hand toward Yisrael’s left hand, and Menasheh in his left hand toward Yisrael’s right hand, and brought them near unto him.
48:14And Yisrael stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Efrayim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Menasheh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly; for Menasheh was the firstborn.
48:15And he blessed Yosef, and said, “The God before whom my fathers Avraham (Abraham) and Yitzḥak (Isaac) walked, the God who has fed me all my life long unto this day,
48:16the angel who redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Avraham and Yitzḥak; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”
48:17And when Yosef saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Efrayim, it displeased him; and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Efrayim’s head unto Menasheh’s head.
48:18And Yosef said unto his father, “Not so, my father; for this is the firstborn; put your right hand upon his head.”
48:19And his father refused, and said, “I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.”
48:20And he blessed them that day, saying, “By you shall Yisrael bless, saying, God make you as Efrayim and as Menasheh.” And he set Efrayim before Menasheh.
48:21And Yisrael said unto Yosef, “Behold, I die; but God will be with you, and bring you back unto the land of your fathers.
48:22Moreover I have given to you one portion above your brothers, which I took out of the hand of the Emori (Amorite) with my sword and with my bow.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
