Genesis, Chapter 47

Yosef presents five of his brothers and then Yaakov to Par’oh, and Yaakov blesses Par’oh; the family settles in the land of Ra’meses, Yosef buys the land of Mitzrayim for Par’oh in the famine, and Yisrael, near death, makes Yosef swear to bury him with his fathers.

Yosef’s brothers before Par’oh

47:1Then Yosef (Joseph) came and told Par’oh (Pharaoh), and said, “My father and my brothers, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, have come out of the land of Kena’an (Canaan); and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.”

47:2And from among his brothers he took five men, and presented them unto Par’oh.

47:3And Par’oh said unto his brothers, “What is your occupation?” And they said unto Par’oh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.”

47:4They said moreover unto Par’oh, “To sojourn in the land we have come; for your servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is severe in the land of Kena’an; now therefore, we pray you, let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”

47:5And Par’oh spoke unto Yosef, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come unto you;

47:6the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt) is before you; in the best of the land make your father and brothers dwell; in the land of Goshen let them dwell; and if you know any capable men among them, then make them overseers over my cattle.”

Yaakov blesses Par’oh

47:7And Yosef brought in Yaakov his father, and set him before Par’oh; and Yaakov blessed Par’oh.

47:8And Par’oh said unto Yaakov, “How old are you?”

47:9And Yaakov said unto Par’oh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”

47:10And Yaakov blessed Par’oh, and went out from before Par’oh.

47:11And Yosef settled his father and his brothers, and gave them a possession in the land of Mitzrayim, in the best of the land, in the land of Ra’meses (Rameses), as Par’oh had commanded.

47:12And Yosef provided for his father, and his brothers, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to their families.

Yosef buys the land for Par’oh

47:13And there was no bread in all the land; for the famine was very severe, so that the land of Mitzrayim and the land of Kena’an fainted by reason of the famine.

47:14And Yosef gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Mitzrayim, and in the land of Kena’an, for the grain which they bought; and Yosef brought the money into Par’oh’s house.

47:15And when the money was spent in the land of Mitzrayim, and in the land of Kena’an, all the Egyptians came unto Yosef, and said, “Give us bread; for why should we die in your presence? For the money is gone.”

47:16And Yosef said, “Give your cattle; and I will give you bread for your cattle, if the money is gone.”

47:17And they brought their cattle unto Yosef; and Yosef gave them bread in exchange for the horses, and for the flocks, and for the herds of cattle, and for the donkeys; and he fed them with bread in exchange for all their cattle for that year.

47:18When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, “We will not hide it from my lord that our money is spent; and the herds of cattle are my lord’s; there is nothing left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies and our land.

47:19Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be slaves unto Par’oh; and give us seed, that we may live, and not die, and that the land not be desolate.”

47:20And Yosef bought all the land of Mitzrayim for Par’oh; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was severe upon them; and the land became Par’oh’s.

47:21And as for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of the border of Mitzrayim even to the other end of it.

47:22Only the land of the priests he did not buy; for the priests had a portion assigned them by Par’oh, and ate their portion which Par’oh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.

47:23Then Yosef said unto the people, “Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Par’oh; here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

47:24And it shall come to pass at the harvests, that you shall give the fifth part unto Par’oh, and four parts shall be your own, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for those of your households, and for food for your little ones.”

47:25And they said, “You have saved our lives; let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Par’oh’s slaves.”

47:26And Yosef made it a statute over the land of Mitzrayim unto this day, that Par’oh should have the fifth part; only the land of the priests alone did not become Par’oh’s.

Yisrael makes Yosef swear

47:27And Yisrael (Israel) dwelt in the land of Mitzrayim, in the land of Goshen; and they had possessions in it, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.

47:28And Yaakov (Jacob) lived in the land of Mitzrayim seventeen years; so the days of Yaakov, the years of his life, were a hundred and forty and seven years.

47:29And the time drew near that Yisrael must die; and he called his son Yosef, and said unto him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me: do not bury me, I pray you, in Mitzrayim;

47:30but I will lie with my fathers, and you shall carry me out of Mitzrayim, and bury me in their burial place.” And he said, “I will do as you have said.”

47:31And he said, “Swear unto me.” And he swore unto him. And Yisrael bowed himself upon the head of the bed.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
