Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 46
Yisrael offers sacrifices at Be’er-Sheva, where God tells him not to fear going down to Mitzrayim; the souls of the house of Yaakov are listed by the sons of Leah, Zilpah, Raḥel and Bilhah, and Yosef meets his father in Goshen and prepares his brothers to speak to Par’oh.
46:1And Yisrael (Israel) journeyed with all that he had, and came to Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba), and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Yitzḥak (Isaac).
אוַיִּסַּ֤ע יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֖א בְּאֵ֣רָה שָּׁ֑בַע וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח זְבָחִ֔ים לֵאלֹהֵ֖י אָבִ֥יו יִצְחָֽק׃
46:2And God spoke unto Yisrael in the visions of the night, and said, “Yaakov (Jacob), Yaakov.” And he said, “Here I am.”
בוַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּמַרְאֹ֣ת הַלַּ֔יְלָה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֣ב ׀ יַעֲקֹ֑ב וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃
46:3And He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down into Mitzrayim (Egypt); for I will there make of you a great nation.
גוַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֥י הָאֵ֖ל אֱלֹהֵ֣י אָבִ֑יךָ אַל־תִּירָא֙ מֵרְדָ֣ה מִצְרַ֔יְמָה כִּֽי־לְג֥וֹי גָּד֖וֹל אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֥ שָֽׁם׃
46:4I will go down with you into Mitzrayim; and I will also surely bring you up again; and Yosef (Joseph) shall put his hand upon your eyes.”
דאָנֹכִ֗י אֵרֵ֤ד עִמְּךָ֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה וְאָנֹכִ֖י אַֽעַלְךָ֣ גַם־עָלֹ֑ה וְיוֹסֵ֕ף יָשִׁ֥ית יָד֖וֹ עַל־עֵינֶֽיךָ׃
46:5And Yaakov rose up from Be’er-Sheva; and the sons of Yisrael carried Yaakov their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Par’oh (Pharaoh) had sent to carry him.
46:6And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), and came into Mitzrayim, Yaakov, and all his seed with him;

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
