Genesis, Chapter 40

Par’oh’s chief butler and chief baker are put in custody where Yosef is; each dreams a dream in one night, Yosef interprets the dreams, and on Par’oh’s birthday the butler is restored and the baker hanged, but the butler forgets Yosef.

The butler and the baker

40:1And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Mitzrayim (Egypt) and his baker offended their lord the king of Mitzrayim.

40:2And Par’oh (Pharaoh) was angry against his two officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.

40:3And he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Yosef (Joseph) was bound.

40:4And the captain of the guard charged Yosef with them, and he served them; and they continued a season in custody.

40:5And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Mitzrayim, who were bound in the prison.

40:6And Yosef came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, behold, they were troubled.

40:7And he asked Par’oh’s officers that were with him in custody in his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”

40:8And they said unto him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” And Yosef said unto them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, I pray you.”

The butler’s dream

40:9And the chief butler told his dream to Yosef, and said to him, “In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;

40:10and in the vine were three branches; and as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes;

40:11and Par’oh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Par’oh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Par’oh’s hand.”

40:12And Yosef said unto him, “This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days.

40:13Within yet three days shall Par’oh lift up your head, and restore you unto your place; and you shall deliver Par’oh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when you were his butler.

40:14But remember me when it is well with you, and show kindness, I pray you, unto me, and make mention of me unto Par’oh, and bring me out of this house;

40:15for indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.”

The baker’s dream

40:16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Yosef, “I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three baskets of white bread on my head;

40:17and in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of baked food for Par’oh; and the birds ate them out of the basket upon my head.”

40:18And Yosef answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: the three baskets are three days.

40:19Within yet three days shall Par’oh lift up your head from off you, and shall hang you on a tree; and the birds shall eat your flesh from off you.”

Par’oh’s birthday

40:20And it came to pass the third day, which was Par’oh’s birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

40:21And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Par’oh’s hand;

40:22but he hanged the chief baker, as Yosef had interpreted to them.

40:23Yet the chief butler did not remember Yosef, but forgot him.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
