Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 39
Yosef is bought by Potifar in Mitzrayim, and Hashem prospers him so that he is made overseer of the house; he refuses his master’s wife, she accuses him falsely, and he is put in prison, where Hashem is with him and the keeper sets him over the prisoners.
39:1And Yosef (Joseph) was brought down to Mitzrayim (Egypt); and Potifar (Potiphar), an officer of Par’oh (Pharaoh), the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Yishme’elim (Ishmeelites), who had brought him down there.
39:2And Hashem was with Yosef, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
39:3And his master saw that Hashem was with him, and that Hashem made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
39:4And Yosef found favor in his sight, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
39:5And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Hashem blessed the Egyptian’s house for Yosef’s sake; and the blessing of Hashem was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
39:6And he left all that he had in Yosef’s hand; and he did not know of anything he had, except the bread which he ate. And Yosef was handsome of form, and handsome to look upon.
39:7And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Yosef; and she said, “Lie with me.”
39:8But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, “Behold, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand;
39:9there is none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
39:10And it came to pass, as she spoke to Yosef day by day, that he did not hearken unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
39:11And it came to pass about this time, that he went into the house to do his work; and there was none of the men of the house there within.
39:12And she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me”; and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got himself out.
39:13And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had fled out,
39:14that she called unto the men of her house, and spoke unto them, saying, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice;
39:15and it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got himself out.”
39:16And she laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.
39:17And she spoke unto him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me;
39:18and it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.”
39:19And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke unto him, saying, “After this manner did your servant to me,” that his wrath was kindled.
39:20And Yosef’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound; and he was there in the prison.
39:21But Hashem was with Yosef, and showed him kindness, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
39:22And the keeper of the prison committed to Yosef’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatever they did there, he was the doer of it.
39:23The keeper of the prison did not look to anything that was under his hand, because Hashem was with him; and that which he did, Hashem made it to prosper.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
